Monster dub
Got a 3 hour drive ahead of me... Any decent mixes out there?
I like this one.
Nice mix by a friend of a friend. Bit of a mashup, and don't be put off by the gentle intro, lovely though it is
On work PC so I can't see anything posted beforehand as YouTube is blocked and I don't know if this qualifies as heavy, heavy roots reggae but have a bang on this one as someone once said.
If you like it then look up anything by The Upsetters or Lee 'Scratch' Perry
I've just discovered this thread!!!!!
@kayak23 that "Eek A Mouse - Ganja Smuggling" track is amazing! I like reggae but know nothing about it, thank you, I know what I'm listening to on the drive home tonight!
Oh yeah, Vaughn Benjamin from Midnite died the other day. 5th of November I think. 😐
jairaj
If you like Eek a mouse try Yellowman I do love a bit of the mouse tho
this may be my favourite all time roots track ( I don't think I posted it earlier)
Now this I have posted somewhere before but its worth a second or third go for the totally absurd lyrics
Has anyone mentioned Horace Andy yet? IIRC he was brought back out of obscurity by recording with massive attack who funded a greatest hits album for him
HOpe not too many repeats from me. apologies if there is
This one never fails to trigger real nostalgia in me
A bit of lovers rock from the King of the lovers?
Toots and the Maytals - many of you might know this from the clash and others. Perhaps Ska rather than roots
Third world?
Lee "scratch " Perry - one of the key pioneers of reggae and a warning of how too much Ganja can mean you lose touch with reality. He produced much of the early reggae and helped forge it into a recognisable form along with people like Max Romeo and the Uppsetter
Sanchez - lovely voice, some very dodgy covers 😉
Can you tell yet this is a bit of an obsession of mine?
Well maybe - I keep onthinking of more tunes worth a mention
Bonus dodgy cover! Extra points if you know the original
Most weeks there's a King Shiloh / Bredda Neil reggae n roots show in Redlight Radio streamed from Facebook. It's usually a Weds evening here in Oz so no idea what time it's on in UK but you can restream old shows an ting.
I found this the other day and I like it. There. I said it. It's kind of a "sing some cliched reggae vocals" kinda track but the more I listen, the more I like it's cheese-pop-reggae sound.
Oh and if anyone is in Western Australia, the local reggae show, Jamdown Vershun, which has been going for 40 years, has a party on in Freo from 5pm til late. Big @ass sound system, djs and bands. Oh and it's nudging 40c here too...

Bonus dodgy cover! Extra points if you know the original
Bread, if I’m not mistaken. I didn’t look it up, just relying on my increasingly shonky memory!
Not sure if this counts as ‘heavy, heavy roots reggae’, but it is keeping the spirit alive - rather fond of the album this comes from.
Not so heavy but still a lickle bit nice
This popped up whilst driving today, not only is it a very good tune it is also very much of the moment.
Had to be done really. Sorry 😂
Nothing to add to the playlist (although I'm really enjoying it) however, I had a big double take at the last one, and I'm only now disappointed it's not a dub roots version of the seminal Wedding Present album, based on the cover alone

Found this stream, 24/7-365! Not sure how they do that but meh...
Thanks for that 24/7/365 stream Kayak.
Lucifer Lucifer you son of a bitch
If I ever catch you I'll lock you in a box and throw you in a ditch
RIP Bunny Wailer, another legend gone. A couple of big names lost in the last couple of weeks (U-Roy & Bunny).
Or what about X-O-Dus, Factory Records only reggae release...
Nobody’s put up any King Tubby, so to rectify that…
And how about Sly and Robbie do King Tubby…
While we are on a dub tip...Iration Steppas rereleased some of their classics late last year.

I managed to miss this thread somehow... always liked a bit of Scientist (Dub Landing was a fav), Mikey Dread, The Congos. My collection of vinyl came from regular post-pay-day visits 'up town' to Daddy Kools in Dean Street.
You gotta love this vid, I Roy tune too:
A fantastic performace from Jacom Miller.. eeaarr mi now!!!
could i shamelessly link to one of my own creations?
That is awesome @Trailmonkey 👍
How does it make you feel?
Bad Brains in dub 👌
Thread bookmarked.
I've been having a reggae day today so I thought I would revisit this thread. I've enjoyed the songs posted. Trouble is I can't remember if these have been posted by me or others before and I have not been all the way thru the thread. sorry if its duplicates
Cracking version of Jonny B Goode
Pretty sure I posted Beres Hammond "rockaway" before - its so nostalgic but I love it so its gets posted again
Lovely sleazy late night feel to this - and loads of memories for me

not big heavy but popped up on a documentary on the Cov music scene and, well, I like it.
Seems like the appropriate thread for this. New Lee Scratch Perry out today. On Tricky's False Idols label. Some of it a bit over-produced, but some nice stuff on there.
"...closing track ‘Goodbye’ was Perry’s last ever recorded vocal performance."

I was starting to move the living room about last couple days including the records from their cupboard.
Inevitably, that ended as not much moving and lots of pulling records out and listening to them... had completely forgotten about Misty In Roots - enjoyed "Live at the Counter Eurovision" and "Wise and Foolish" LP's.
Apologies if this is already on here
No idea if it's heavy, or if it's roots but it is reggae and I'm loving listening to '10 foot ganja plant'.
Saw this guy last week. Very very good vocalist. A lil bit Chronnixy.
Also Kabaka Pyramid getting some plays too.
The Hempolics
Somehow, part of me isn’t surprised about the number of tracks that have aroused the ire of the Copyright Police and YouTube algorithms.
Quite liking this from Nubya Garcia with a dub sound to it.
Wicked Queen Omega tune
Cheers Kayak. I've put links up before no drama but for some reason, it didn't work today.
There's also a remix version which has Snoop Dog sample
Macka B is worth a listen to, too.
With YouTube videos, you don't post it as a link. Just paste the address into the reply box, hit submit and it appears.
