So today I received a pair of Shure 215's, my word they're good but they do block out the surrounding noise to a point I have no awareness (yes I know they say noise isolation on the packaging) but having come from pretty basic Sennheiser earbuds they are a bit of a shock. My Shennheiser HD599's block a lot less but my phone doesn't want to run them without an amp & my B&W P3's which are on paper ideal I find very uncomfortable as the make my ears boil, so any recommendations for headphones that have some sort of decent sound but you can wear whilst walking the dog to the pub back of beyond?

Shures are also used as monitors so no wonder they isolate. I have a set too and they’re great for sound quality but impossible if someone is trying to speak to you.

I just use cheap Bluetooth sport earbuds from Amazon for exercise as I don’t care too much for sweating into anything expensive.

Cheers both. CFH can you confirm that the mic will work with IOS using the standard lightening to 3.5mm converter? Do you own a pair& if so how much would you say they isolate?

The whole point of IEM’s like the 215’s is that they should block background noise as efficiently as possible to get the best bass and clear mid and top ranges. I have a pair of 215’s that have gone on the fritz, I think an internal connection has gone, but tbh Shure have an issue with connections - I bought a Lightning > MMCX cable to use with another make and the first broke after a couple of months, the replacement after six, so not impressed with their stuff. Anyway, I used to use a triple-flange eartip with my 215’s, which gave a noise reduction of around 29dB, the same as professional hearing protection, and it’s never been an issue when I’ve been wearing them, even around town. I now often wear a pair of over-ear Taotronics BT noise-cancelling headphones, and they’re not far off the same.
I agree that, when you’re not used to that level of noise cancelling it can be a bit disorientating, and you really do need to pay much more attention to your surroundings, especially when crossing the road, for example; but it’s still worth persevering with it, you’ll get more benefit from the IEM’s, plus they stay in place better with the longer triple-flange eartips if you use them.
If you’re still having issues when using them while out wearing them, you could give Apple EarPods a go, I really like them, I’ve got several pairs, including some with a Lightning connector, and they’re really comfy and sound pretty good, plus you can hear background sounds more easily, and they’re pretty cheap.
Just to add, I’ve got a few different pairs of IEM’s, Ultimate Ears Studio 5 Pro/ TripleFi Pro, MeeAudio Pinnacle P1’s, MeeAudio sport IEM’s, all with triple-flange eartips, and they do make a huge difference to sound quality.

Only a single button remote, but works with iOS AFAIK.

Use mine daily as a phone headset, and also for short haul travel, where I can't be bothered to take my Bose.

Assuming you can get the fit right, using the various buds included, they're faultless for the money.

Discussed previously here - https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/budget-mid-level-in-ear-headphones/

De nada! Added a link above. Looks like they're no longer available at John Lewis, but seem to be here - https://www.richersounds.com/sony-in-ear-mic-headphones.html

Also Curry's for the same money, I can google 😉
As an aside has any headphone users listened to any 8D audio? It's bit of a Head**** but my daughter insists it nothing new.

Sony nc headphones have an ambient sound setting that lets in (and in fact amplifies) higher frequency outside sound but still blocks out lower frequency. So the rumble of transport noise is gone but you can still hear people talking clearly over your music.
