OK, so my surround sound on the kinda cheap but still nice quality plan has all gone sort of according to, er, plan. But hit a snag:
Got a nice clean AV amp off of ebay, which has two HDMI inputs, which is all I need - one for Sky+HD, one for the new Blu-ray player. Trouble is the second HDMI input has started playing up and gives me no sound and a sparkly picture. Swap of cable and equipment to the other input all works ok, so looks like it is the input.
Question is - how to get around it? If I use component video and digital sound is that the same quality as HDMI?
Is it likely to be a pain to get the HDMI input fixed?
Hope someone knows rthe simple answer!
Does the amp have an optical port?
If so optical from Sky box for sound and HDMI straight to TV.
You can get a hdmi switching unit that has multiple inputs and 1 output, just put it inline. Have a look on ebay.
Cheers, it would be neatest if I could just switch inputs using the amp's remote, rather than choosing via the tv remote. So the really short version of the question is is component video plus optical audio the same quality as HDMI?
Is this any good?

No, only HDMI does HD - optical is fine for the sound because it will carry Dolby & DTS 5.1, which is the best sound you'll get out of a Sky box..
Back to my earlier reply - can you not take HDMI straight to the TV for pictures?
*edit* - I see your comment re 1 remote
Ah, ok - thanks guys.
Automatic switcher might be best, although as pointed out I could also send picture straight to tv.
My av amp upscales normal tv when using hdmi input, but not when using component and optical input. Not sure if yours will be the same.
Do you have a Maplins near you? I bought one from them yesterday.

I've got a cheap HDMI switch in my complicated and user unfriendly system just until I can afford an HDMI matrix. It was the cheapest on eBay from china and came with a remote control and it auto senses the last device to switch on which is nice.
