I know there's a tradition of 'dark side' Morris dancers who can look, frankly, fairly intimidating (not this lot) and I don't know where it comes from but you'd think DC would have run a mile from these ones, not posed with them?

That child looks properly frightened.

But wouldn't you if you knew your dad was a lizard....

EDIT: I grew up near that town (Banbury - see recent thread (oh, and that's the bank Bregante's related to)). I don't ever remember blacked up morris dancers!

Black face morris is rooted in when unemployed folk would dance for money. They blacked up with soot so as not to be easily recognised, begging was illegal then. I think it was in the 1600s...

Yet more evidence of the Tories trying to out ukip the kippers ... 😉
And his daughter is rightly terrified !
I think well give him an official STW hand wringing leftie pass on this one, however

That's one theory. Another is, early 20th century, minstrel shows were very popular and blacking up for all sorts of purposes became all the rage.

I don't know if "Dark Side" was just supposed to mean blacking up or something more satanic, but it's Border Morris - which was basically reinvented in the 1970s.

I'm surprised they didn't run from him!

Still danced regularly, in memory of Bernard Ingham.

There is a tradition of blacked up Morris dancers in Bacup. If you can be arsed you may learn something about how the working classes managed to get one over on there "betters" and get away with. Only for a day a year mind.

Have you read the article Kryton?
It's a really good piece with a stupid headline.

I quite like DC for that, funnily enough.
Good spin.

There's a big row currently in the next village to mine as the local Morris "black up" & have been accused of being racists. Personally I have more important things to worry about but there are some vociferous types locally who are trying to escalate it.

Strangely the women's group who also din the black make up but wear "sexy goth" outfits (mini skirts & fishnets) are much more popular

IIRC, there's documentary record of blackface morris dancing back to the days of Henry 8th, I read somewhere that it was adopted as a disguise against the devil.
