Well this morning was a bit more nippy than usual but it isn't the snowmageddon happening elsewhwere in europe. Do you think that this cold spell will fizzle out as most of the weather panics do?

Nah, it'll carry on through 'til September now.

It can get cold in the winter, sometimes it's frosty. Last year from October to Febuary up here the temp never went higher than about -6 that was cold as we had snow too. But us Brits do love to talk about the weather.

Certainly chilly this morning. -5°C according to the car.
Scraped windows and a slow drive to work due to a clear frosty sky with a low sun blinding everyone (am I the only person that keeps prescription sunglasses in the car in winter???)

But yeah, not as cold as last year by a looong way. Possibility of snow at the weekend but still and clear now, so I can't see it being anything more than a sprinkle.

Meanwhile Eastern Europe is properly chuffin freezing. -30°C in Slovakia where I'm going in four weeks. *buys extra thermals*

Minus four outside my house this morning, so cold that I had to resort to running tights. I'm a hot blooded, sweaty bastard so the jacket was giving me a sweaty back after a couple of miles.

I wish my metabolism would let me wrap up warm and stay that way.

Personally, I don't give much credibility to any forecast beyond the next 72 hours (if that).

I expect snowmageddon not to arrive here as, more often than not, these 'worse case scenario' forecasts end up as a massive over-reaction.

The MET office is in a no-win situation : under-react & we all ask "why weren't we warned?", over-react and we all moan about another innaccurate OTT prediction. The latter is the better option because at least people prepare for the worst even if it never transpires.

I hope this cold spell does fizzle out as I was enjoying commuting to work in the relatively mild weather we had for most of January.

Coldest it's been this winter today for me. -4C when I set off to work. Still compared to last year when It was minus -10 or lower for about a month and we had a few feet of snow fall...

It's always been a bit chilly around this time of year, I blame global climate change 😉

Speaking to a colleague this morning and it was snowing hard in Rome. Very odd whether. Central europe was freezing when I was their Tuesday/Wed.

However out last night and conditions (although a bit chilly!) were superb. Almost like summer in a odd way!

I wasn't going to take the bike out today, but will take one for the team and ride on Dez's behalf.

There will be no snow and no ice. Like zippykona, I have unused 29er Ice Spiker Pros that I'm desperate to get out of their boxes. I'm might break them in this afternoon with a long ride on tarmac.

Two women on the train this morning were complaining about the cold

"It's so unexpected" said one of them.

Really?! It's winter, it gets cold. That's what happens when our hemisphere angles away from the sun. I've been expecting it since about October!

It seems a very British thing to complain about the weather, but it doesn't half get on my wick!

Yes. Trails were rock hard and bone dry last night. I was also clean and dry after the ride and I didn't even have to wash the bike!

Trails have dried out nicely, it'll be a brisk ride tonight, maybe even a snow night ride, it's due here this avo, clouding over nicely, maybe even a spot of kite snowboarding tomorrow..

It was pretty brassic in Munich early part of the week, it's pretty general, all the time that wind remains in the East and the high blocks that low coming in from the Atlantic, they don't know which is going to win, the high blocking with cold or the low with mild, anyway you lot up North will be getting some over the weekend and no mistake.

Good. I like snow, makes the place look clean for a bit.

Try and keep the damn dog out of the lake this year..

I like this switch to cold continental air as it is much drier and maybe it will start to dry things out up here a bit.

However, the rain is coming back again tomorrow and it's back to soggy cold rather than dry cold, grrrr!

I don't want to sound like some BOF going on about the "old days", but back in 1962 I lived in a two-floor maisonette with no central heating. It had a fireplace in each room, but the only one big enough to give any heat was in the lounge/diner where we used to huddle for warmth. This was in the big freeze of '62/'63 and I was waking up under a pile of blankets that didn't make you any warmer (just felt like the weight was crushing you to death - duvets hadn't been invented) dressed in thermals, pyjamas AND a dressing gown and socks to find that the windows were iced over on the inside!

There was no water because all the external pipes had frozen up. I remember the old man trying to get them going by running a hand-flamer over them.

Mind you - I set the boiler to get the central heating going at full wack for two hours before I got home yesterday and it had only managed to struggle to an internal temperature of 15C...

Windows - You had windows?
We only had windows when enough ice formed in the holes in the wall.

Mr Woppit

Yes old man, but that winter was the coldest of the last 200 years.

Anyway, there was ice on the inside of the windows and walls of my house in December 2010, and my water supply froze too.

As usual took the scooter to the train station this morning in -8degs. 60mph with the visor open a snip to stop it misting up - gave me a frozen face. Agony. Fingers werent great either, really need to get some of those handlebar muffs for this kind of weather.

Not looking foward to getting back to the train station tongith and climbing into my riding jacket and boots that have been sat in the top box all day nicely chilling. brrrrrrrrr!!!!

back in 1962
... etc

Ah! 1962! When men were Men. And their women were Men too.

We've all become massively embarassing sissies thanks to insulation & central heating.

Is there a reason why we're surprised by it being winter every year?

Do some of us go through the year actually thinking "maybe February will be lovely and hot this year"?

Best commute in in a long time this morning, trails were rock hard and the puddles frozen solid - a bit like my toes after an hour and a half. Can't wait for the return journey tonight!

Hope it stays like this for HTN tomorrow.

I work with some guys in Edmonton, Alberta. They're currently experiencing a freak heat wave, with temparatures expected to soar to above freezing. I was there last February and it dropped to -32, but no-one raised an eyebrow (possibly because their eyebrows were all frozen solid).

Yeah it's been nippy, but still feels fairly mild generally considering is supposed to be the middle of winter.

Last year I was digging my way OFF mountains because the snow was coming in so quickly, and it was bloody freezing. This year the crampons have barely come out of the cupboard.

Still waiting for the winter proper to start, feels odd that we are in Feb already and not really had much "real" winter weather. Still, good for businesses though, last year must have crippled a lot of them (unless you happened to be selling wellies and thermals!)

I'm liking the bright wintery sunshine 🙂 Was snowing lightly on my way back home from work last night, none of it seems to have settled though.

For all you oldies reminiscing of 1962 or 1947, 1982 holds the coldest temp.

This is my favourite weather for riding, no cleaning the bike, amazing traction, beautiful blue skies and the hills are nearly empty of walkers.magic.

sounds about right D.

Just ordered some bar muffs on ebay though as my fingers fell off on the way home from Pershore on the scooter this evening.

Come on the snow though, I want to go ride the white stuff on Mt Malvern tomorrow night!
