My thermal baselayer is shot so was thinking on using my Skins A400 instead? Okay its not specifically a baselayer but it wicks and is tight fitting so maybe okay to wear under a 320 merino mid layer? Wondering if anybody has tried this, thoughts appreciated?

Can't see why not. I used a Canterbury Hot baselayer for a couple of years, brilliant bit of kit.

Yeah I use a compression top (Aldi)under my Merino - works well.

I got a skins compression top from Santa, wore it up the Cairngorm on Boxing day, I was not warm. 🙁
Edit: I was wearing outer garments too...
