I know I'm a few years behind here, but not being a gamer and just playing it for the last few days, it really is splendid fun.

I am rather shite though as I have cheated with all the weapons from the start, still haven't got the hang of the gravity gun in combat situations too. I have a feeling it is going to interfere with my job search...

Doing that ruins the game. Not being judgemental or nowt, but it does kill the narrative and the game designers intentions.

Great game.

Worth trying to play it without cheating though, you pick up weapons quite quickly.

Not for me, I am still getting killed at intervals. I'm not great at games so it just gives me a fighting chance. Tbh I still use the pistol or shotgun 95% of the time. Though maybe that'll change as it goes on.

I can't imagine cheating at halflife 2, what a way to ruin the game. It's mostly about the story. Not a hard game to play though, you must be really rubbish at games. Great game though, brilliant idea and implementation. Start again and do it properly.

You have got to be shitting me? HL2 is genuinely one of the best games ever, and deserves to be played 'properly'. You're spoiling the development curve by having everything at the beginning because the game builds on the suspense of you being vulnerable.

You absolutely HAVE to quit and start again, WITHOUT cheating.

EDIT: Ravenholm - that's where it's at!

That's why I got it, though it was portal I was after mainly. Both are excellent. If these were from a few years ago I'd imagine the latest games are pretty amazing. Though I am probably at the limit of what I can play on a 3 year old MacBook.

Gravity gun and buzz saw blades. Think I may start a playthrough again..
Give portal a go too... Portal 2 out soon!

I'm the same as you loddrik, picked it up on steam, first purchase on there. Am really enjoying it. must point out though i'm enjoying it far more by not cheating... 😉

Start again and do it naturally. I think I might be on "easy" difficulty and am getting through easy with the weapons I pick up. its the nearest to cheating I can get without cheating 😀

The vehicles are a pain to drive mind you.

Gravity gun and buzz saw blades.
Amazingly effective I've found, not as amusing as gravity gun + flammable barrels/canisters though

I never really got into HL2. I got to Ravenholme then got a bit bored with it, didn't see what all the fuss was about. I want to, as everyone says how good it is, but it just didn't do it for me!

Now Portal, that is an awesome game 😀

Actually half life is a better game than halflife 2 IMO. Edge of the seat scare tactics and they work brilliantly.

Just bought this for the PS3 - the version with the 5 games in one box? hoping it will get me away from Black ops - tried Medal of Honour but didn't like that much.

I'd be really looking forward to portal 2 but I'm pretty sure my MacBook won't be up to it.

I feel like a naughty child now, maybe I'll skulk off and remove the weapons cheat....

If you can't play HL2 without cheating I'd now even bother installing portal.

I'm serious though, there's a lot more puzzles that require timing and skill plus use of the gun to get through.

Ive played and finished portal, its not like I can't play games, just don't play as much as many people. Besides, great though portal is, it's still not as good as Abes Exodus...

Ravenholm - that's where it's at!

Ravenholm was by far my favourite part of that game.

Drop the gun cheats and stick with playing it properly - mtfu and you'll soon get the hang of it!

What they say above really. Cheating with all the weps just ruins the games experience.

Samuri, if you liked the 1st Half Life (Brilliant game incidentaly) check out the remake that they are working on at the moment.

If you haven't seen it yet, hit the Interwebs for the Portal 2 gameplay trailer. It looks stellar.

anyone know if it is only half life 2 available for PS3? are HL" episodes 1-3 also available, Ive never actually played HL1, but have played 2 and all of the extra episodes. Great game, nothing more satisfying than taking down one of those gun ships, or a strider.

Ant Lions were a PITA though!!!

Nice to see they are working on a reworked version of the original. Wasted many a day playing that game over and over again, just never got bored with it.

I got sick of the Steam client so I've taken HL2 off my system now as I just couldn't get it to run properly. Shame really as i was enjoying replaying it

Orangebox is availbe of the PS3 but it's horrible even Valve appoligised for the port.

Steam is one of the best clients there is, brilliant bit of software.

whats wrong with it? not worth getting? You think the HL2 episode 3 (rumoured for the end of the year) will be release with HL & HL ep 2 & 3?

Steam is one of the best clients there is, brilliant bit of software.

It's given me nothing but trouble on this install:

Poor download speeds (less than 1kb/s in some cases, average of 45kb/s)
Crashing on starting HL2
Random crashes locking me out of the system completely (had to force DX9 to get it to run)
Failing to detect a connection (when windoze finds one)

The final nail in the coffin lid was at the Dam in HL2 where you meet Alyx. Right before getting into the airlock it would crash with an unrecoverable error. I removed it (both HL2 and Steam), downloaded it again (which took ages) and loaded it up only for it to happen again.

Steam is awesome for me, the only problem is you can't limit download speeds so it hogs all of your bandwidth if its on to a fast download (I usually get about 500kb/s which is nice).

Sounds more like a hardware problem than steam client to me. I always get 600kbs+ unless it's a big release and it's busy but even then probably over 450.

After reading this yesterday, I thought I'd relive some uni days by playing some HL.

Installed Steam on my Macbook, and downloaded HL2. Just tried to play it today, and it won't get past the very first splash screen 🙁

Machine is a 3 year old 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB ram - should this be up to it, or am I expecting too much? Considering HL played pretty well on my laptop about 11 years ago, which was certainly considerably lower spec than this, I'm surprised that it's struggling.

Any thoughts?

Cheers, Rich

Minimum: OS X version Leopard 10.5.8, Snow Leopard 10.6.3, 1GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8 or higher, or ATI X1600 or higher, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

HTH

Yup, I know what the minimum spec they recommend is for the game, just thought that someone might have a view on this.

My machine says that it has GMA 950 with 64 MB of shared system memory, so not exactly an NVIDIA, but certainly my Toshiba from 2000 didn't either and that didn't struggle 😕

Oh well, only £7 wasted...

Cheers, Rich

Video card in gaming is pretty important component, if you having got the minimum spec then it's either going to be really bad or not work.

Aye, but my point is that I'm sure my old PC laptop didn't necessarily meet the minimum spec, and it was fine. Same game on a 7 year newer machine, and it won't even get past the first splash screen!

Looks like I'll be uninstalling Steam then and returning this machine to simple media player duties 🙁

Cheers, Rich

GFx requirements on games like HL1 are literally light years behind what is needed to run HL2 etc.

For gaming, the GPU is the most important component of your build. If you have a shared GFX forget most FPS games from 2004 onwards.

Ditto what Lowey says ^

HL2 was quite a graphic intensive game at it's time, certainly a fair leap from its predecessor.

If you can get anywhere near turning any settings down then you might struggle through with it, but ultimately you'd need a dedicated chip to enjoy it how it's meant to be.

any ideas when HL2: episode 3 is due? I read somewhere it was the end of this year, but wondered if anyone had any inside knowledge?

Add that to the fact the Mac source code is new and is using Orangebox source not the old HL2 source. Try running Portal on your 7 year old PC it won't like it.

I got a new GFX yesterday as my other one was overheating, DX11 is good ain't it.

HL2 is genuinely one of the best games ever,

Genuinely one of the most tedious and overrated games ever more like!
