Can this forum be hosted on it because I think it's the only way to speed it up?
200 seconds to complete a task that would take current super-computers 10,000 years!

Well if STW could run on it, it would be a relief that things have speeded up...

A Quantum of Solace*, one could say, though would it still respect my privacy on a more regular basis?

*OED Solace and consolation are synonyms meaning "relief from grief or disappointment."

Except IBM say they can do the same task on a classical computer in 2.5 days, rather than 10,000 years.

It's not true quantum supremacy, but still a significant step forward. 3 minutes vs 2.5 days, a 53 qubit processor vs the world's most powerful computing array......

at this stage, there are orders of magnitude difference in cost between a qubit array vs a classical chip based array.

But to compare the two kind of misses the point of what quantum computing can / will be able to do in the future. QC won't just do what Classical computers can do faster, they can do things that Classical computers simply can't.  As an example, molecular modelling of chemical molecules where currently we can only approximate, then have to make them and test them without a high degree of certainty.  Because quantum mechanics 'controls' the behaviour of molecules in interactions / reactions, QC is the right simulation to predict that behaviour accurately. But the design of the QC, and the 'software' to run it are going to be relatively speaking unique to those specific applications, rather than a general purpose computer that you can just run your own software on, and frankly for day to day purposes standard technology and foreseeable (moore's law) development will be plenty good enough.

Other applications being looked at are climatology, battery design, being able to predict complex global supply chains, etc. You won't have a qubit based processor in your phone any time soon, if ever (you'd need a cryogenic dilution fridge in your other pocket for a start)

So yes, it's computing in the sense of being able to do very complex 'calculations' very fast but comparing it to classical computing is not valid, other than currently trying to compare the two on a task that is common or achievable by both to show whether one is better or not.

Not necessarily. There are several types of cypher which are almost equally as effective against QC as normal ones. Even bitcoin mining can be done more cost effectively on Tesla cards than a QC.

The real advantage of QC is in their ability to solve high dimensionality problems which are infeasible on conventional HPCs due to exponential effects in the coupling of dimensions.

At a rough guess:
The active compounds in certain drugs, actually probably all drugs, interact with the human body based not only on what they're made of but also what shape they are. We can guess that a particular molecule might have a beneficial effect because it has a similar shape to another molecule we already know works. With current computing techniques we're only estimating shapes at the moment so it's a bit of a targeted trial-and-error approach. With quantum computing, because quantum mechanics is effectively what determines the shape of a molecule and how each individual atom in that molecule reacts with its surroundings, we can more accurately model drug/target interactions.

Don't quote me on that though. It's been A LONG time since I was involved with drug development and I'm sure modern techniques are much more advanced than I remember.

If only I could think of an area of application where being able to run really really complex models really really quickly to get ahead of the competition was something people with loads and loads of money were prepared to pay for. Something like financial markets say. Yeah let's knock the arse out of that.

I may not be the first person in the world to have this thought.
