I got a bit frustrated with missing a couple of replies to my posts in the Classifieds forum the other day, so I've cooked up a basic little 'If This Then That' recipe to send me a message on gtalk whenever someone replies to a message I've favourited.
If you haven't used IFTTT before, it's a site that connects together web services to do new and interesting things, like tweeting new blog posts, copying photos from instagram to dropbox or vice versa. It's handy, if you're into that kind of thing.
As the recipe uses my personal URL, I haven't just shared it within IFTT. Here are the basic steps:
1. Create an IFTTT account, if you haven't already
2. Create a new recipe, starting with 'Feed'
3. Select 'New feed item' and use the URL for your favourites feed. Mine looks like this:
http://singletrackworld.com/forum/rss/profile/ade
...but you can copy it from the link called 'Favourites RSS' from this page.
4. Choose google talk as the action channel, and authorise it as per the instructions.
5. Select 'Send me a chat'.
Obviously, you can set it to do any other actions you prefer, like sending a tweet, an SMS or an email.
Pete Gale's already made a recipe that emails your choice of classified search results.
If you use favourites a lot and this is a bit too noisy, the Favourites RSS works really well in Google Reader too.
Hope this is useful. It'd be good to hear anyone else's forum hacks (but not the Evilzone kind).
ade - did you have to set up DNS SRV records at your domain to get the IFTTT bot to talk to your google chat? My domain is managed by google you see, but hosted at fasthosts.
looks a bit too complicated.
Nope. My gtalk address is @gmail.com, so no domain setup necessary.
ah.
this kind of freaks me out (its the link that IFTTT give you if you have google apps account):

Good find, Ade. I am replying to this thread to test whether it works or not as it's now in my favs...
...and it worked (on my PC)! 🙂
Just need to work out how to stop my Android phone chiming every time as well!
Genius. Nice work.
Meant to post on this, but forgot. Love IFTTT, and always looking for new uses for it. Never really bothered with the fav rss feed on here, but this finally makes it useful. Great idea, Ade.
Thanks for this - I've adapted it so I get a notification on my phone via pushover.

If the web monkeys are listening, any chance of RSS feeds fom a users forum activity, or better still from a search?
I have a randomly variable electric shock applied to my genitals whenever a thread reaches wunundreyd
Pretty sure I could write something that gives you a testicular electric shock every hour (and wunundreyd new thread posts), if you like?
Is there a way of being notified when nuclear power discussions come up?

That's great. I set up an account a little while ago and forgot about it - now got a recipe working away [hopefully].
Quick question - if I want to be notified of more than one keyword do I need a separate recipe for each keyword or can they be added to one recipe?
