I installed Google Chrome a couple of months ago (currently on ver. 5.0.375.70) because I was finding IE was just so slow.

But since then I've found my laptop freezing quite a bit and I keep getting that "Aw Snap!" message, saying Shockwave plugin has crashed etc.

I'm an XP user.

I'm seriously thinking of ditching it, but have never used anything else.

What's reasonable and fast, boys & girls?

Firefox.

Are you sure the two events are related (ie, your laptop is slow because of Chrome)?

No I'm not sure, but the suspicion is enough to make me ask the question.

And it's not that my laptop is slow, it's just that I'm getting sick of Mr Aw Snap!

I found Chrome used much more CPU resource than Firefox, so have gone back to Firefox.

chrome uses alot of resources, memory, processor, and hard drive space, had to take it off my netbook because it was using over a gig of space on the hard drive. i still have it on my laptop on windows and ubuntu and find it really good, never had problems with it crashing.

I've had it BSOD/reboot my (new) laptop - win7 64 bit - when downloading more than a few flv files at the same time, compared to no problems doing likewise with firefox. Haven't tried it on my old xp desktop to see if it's any better or worse.

(Dunno the version offhand, but it's an install from mebbe 3 months ago)

Opera is very fast. Faster than Firefox or Chome.

Well I'm trying Firefox for now and I'll look at Opera if I get any problems.

I certainly wouldn't revert back to IE. its just pants. Chrome is quite CPU/Memory intensive but I gave it a second chance on my work laptop after trying it on my Netbook with slow consequences. If your CPU is slow or you don't have a lot of memory, Go for Firefox or Opera. Just Promise you have go rid of IE for good!

I use chrome all the time now. so much quicker than ie. never really got on with firefox though I use it occasionally on ubuntu machine, I've had no more problems than normal for win xp since using chrome- been using it since the day it was released.

Talk about tempting fate- just got the shockwave flash plugin failed message for the first time ever! 😕
maybe its a flash problem not chrome?

I've been having the very same issues, including the occasional blue screen of death. Its been happening ever since I updated Chrome about 2 months ago. Its been about 2 years since I did a clean install, so I figured I'd just wipedown, re-partiotion and start again and I've had to do another since. This build although no different, appears to be stable.

Interestingly, I've not re-installed flash this time.

Go figure.

Think I'll try opera.

Will try Opera on the wife's P series then, if Chrome is a hog.

what exactly is so wrong with Internet Explorer? Aside from the whole monopoly Microsoft thing? Is it just because it's not open source and you can't get add-ons?

I never had a real issue with IE, I just found it got slower and slower ahe more updates came along.

I found that Chrome was much faster but felt it and/or its plugins tended to hog all the available memory, and kept getting odd messages and behaviour.

IE is a bit of a heavyweight beast, and it's not the fastest. Plus, it takes up more screen space with buttons and toolbars and junk - yes I know you can turn them off but some of them you want. It's not as nicely laid out as Chrome.
