Talk to me about them and help me understand them. 😕
I've had them on my website for about 2 months now.
I have made the grand total of £0.61 so far.
It took quite a while to set up, I haven't worked out how much that comes to per hour 😉
However, now they are there I might as well leave them, doesn;t cost me anything to have them up and I may get lucky and get rich from it one day.
To be fair to them though, I have got three small, unobtrusive adverts, didn't want to spoil the look of the site, bigger more prominent ads would probably bring in more revenue.
Have a look at the amazon affiliate scheme too.

What's the point if I don't fully understand how adwords works. 😕
I'm supposed to be able to set the price, but apparently Google does it for me!
Or is the price pre-determined by the words chosen and therefore simply the same as any other advertising plan, hot words, hot prices?
It's costing me about 50p per click through at the moment, which would appear to be high and no real advantage over a regular ad.
I assume you mean using them to promote your business. Don't use the cost per click suggested by google. Almost all my adwords say they are below the minimum required but I still get clicks. You set a maximum and google shows your ad the current price up to that maximum. The price fluctuates throughout the day. 50p sounds high but might be worth it for a good keyword set, I've got a few at that value but they are very specific to my business. You need to experiment with the values and see what brings in useful clicks. Don't price everything the same. Use google analytics to see what keywords are bringing visitors that actually stay on your website. I set a limit per day and tweak my costing so I am just about reaching the limit by the end of the day.
Once you've got the basics then you need to set-up some complex keyword strings and negative keywords. There's a few on-line guides that explain it better than I ever could.
Adwords will churn through your cash like there's no tomorrow if you don't control it. If you're after a particular market eg. business users then think about using time restriction on the ads so you dont show ads in the middle of the night. Turn off the 'content network' matching if you don't want to appear next to random blogs etc. Forget Google's reccomended CPCs and daily budget, set your own. Set your ads so they'll only appear in positions 1-3 or whatever of the sponsored listings. Try using a couple of ad variants so you can see what works and refine your listings. Really keep an eye on the matched searches and use negative keywords to eliminate the time wasters.
And above all, work on your SEO because it seems that organic listings will generate better response than the sponsored ads.
