good bye STW!! i fly to the falklands on sunday for 7 months.

my main job out there is to do some ali welding and some spots of carpentry. I will keep STW posted and will put some pics up.

2nd my car will be on my dads drive for 7 months. (no tax, mot, ins) is there any precautions i should take before i leave it? it will be run every 2 weeks and "rocked" out of place to make sure the brakes arnt seized on.

any thing else?

thanks shaun

I'd keep it taxed and have someone actually drive it, to be honest. Just idling it even til it's warm isn't going to be very good for it.

£90 spent on tax could well save you a big bill later on I reckon. Someone should be able to drive it on their own insurance if fully comp - take it for a 20 minute open road spin or something.

have a good trip shaun - I'd be tempted to keep it taxed and mot'd and ask your dad to drive it on his insurance once every couple of weeks.

his insurance will only allow him to drive it if it is still insured?? we checked. it will have a mot until august. and i think he will be taking it for a quick spin around the block or around the garages.

Last time I worked in Hong Kong all I did with my Honda Accord was disconnect the battery. 12 months later I reconnected the battery and it started first time and drove fine. It was stored in my garage rather than out in the open though.

Ah! I guess we should've discussed location! I work in Fareham, if that helps ?

I think epicsteve's method of leaving it alone completely would be better than running it a bit. You could get a solar trickle charger for the battery, if it's enough to compensate for the alarm drain. You could try the old trick of turning it over without spark plugs when you come back to it to get oil circulating around the engine.

I'm sure CK will be along shortly as STW's resident car expert.

Over inflate the tyres to prevent them flat spotting. Remove anything and everything you can from the inside (including stereo, parcel shelf etc) so that anyone looking in can see there's nothing inside. Glove box open etc.

Learn this before you go and sing it to any passing Argies.

Enjoy, I've heard the arse end of nowhere is lovely at this time of year. 😀

make sure you get it sorn via DVLA (or you'll be fined by default as I understand it)

re car - make sure it moves a 1/4 wheel turn between sits, so it isn't always sitting on same part of tyre. (I'd agree with molgrips in thta actually driving it would be a lot better - fully heat engine each week - you tax it your dad can probably drive it on 3rd party only via his ins - check this though)

trickle charger every so often might help if it has an alarm etc.
Run air con and heater and fully operate brakes quite a few times, if it has these.
