Morning all,

Had a flashing amber light on the dash and a noticeable loss in power. Guessing it's glow plugs (?) Are these expensive?

Also hitting 90k so cambelt too....£250-300?

Could be an expensive month!

Very much considering trading in for a nice diesel estate....anything in the STW garage?

Cheers

Chris

interesting guess ....

the one thing its unlikely to be is glow plugs.

Get the faults read sounds like its gone into limp mode.... could be a very cheap fix once you know where to look. No point throwing parts at it .

Cam belt £400 fitted at my garage. Parts are ~£100 (belt, idler and water pump) if you want to do it yourself.

Glow plug replacement £60, thought it's almost certainly not the problem. Probably limp mode (does it go back to normal after turning engine off and back on?), possibly a coked up turbo or some other issue.

Nice diesel estate? How about 2014 Mercedes CLS250 Shooting Brake £22k? Or even my Vito Dualiner 2012 now for sale at £11.5k?

Depending on the age of your car you might be OK for the cambelt. I have a Mk6 1.6tdi and VW specify 200K miles or 5 years for replacement so you might be able to eek it out a little longer.

Not sure about your fault though, as far as I'm aware glow plugs are only used to warm the diesel to start the engine so shouldn't affect it when running. Could be DPF needing a clear out/regen maybe? Could be worth taking it to a VW specialist if there's one around (to avoid main dealer prices) and checking for any fault codes.

The glow plug light is used to indicate a variety of engine faults.

Only way to be sure is to get the fault codes read.

Modern diesels don't only use the glowplugs for starting though, they can operate at other times depending on all sorts of things.

Our tiguan would flag that up as a misfire warnings when the cam sensor failed, but that would flag up engine fault before it was done, but best bet get it hooked up and scanned.

Thanks for the info. Think i'll have an expensive month!

Mowgli - Yes, it seemed fine earlier this morning after I turned the engine off and then on again. It's a 2012 plate and I do about 25k motorway mileage a year on long interval services.

Off to the garage!

Hairybiker - thanks for the offer but my piggy bank won't stretch that far 🙂

A glow plug replacement on my Vaxhall Astra was £135, of which £70 was diagnostics. Never had any issues starting, even in sub zero temperatures, only knew there was an issue because of the warning light.

I would guess EGR valve. But as said get the codes read, could be one of many things.

It won't be glow plugs, only used on starting and are nothing to do with your power output. My codes say all four are shot, but as it'll be a pig of a job and it still starts with no issues I'm leaving it be for now (btw this doesn't cause any dash warnings).

Could be either turbo or DPF although you're doing long runs so I wouldn't expect it to the the DPF yet.

Could be the controller unit rather than the plugs themselves if it's saying all of them are faulty.

only used on starting

Not on a mk6 golf - they are used as emissions control for a long time till good and warm....
