I remember that.
I was cycling home from the South of England when I was a teenager and to save time I got on the A1 as I went north.
That's when I got passed by quite a few of of them. The guys seemed to be sitting on orange boxes rather than proper seats. They were hammering along.
The MVIII goggles, tank driver leather vests, and the gauntlets still stick in my mind.
I thought that would be a dead cool job. 🙂

I remember those drivers exactly as Epicyclo described but saw mine on M4, goggles gauntlets and some thick kind of padded coats. Looked great fun to me 😆
