I've just acquired a 4" Swindens for the grand total of £45 - striped it down and it's now off to the powdercoaters for a repaint (someone had covered it in green gloss Dulux), but it's a beauty...

😀 open them up half a turn have seen one shear when fully shut and it got really cold in a workshop 😯

i paid 100 quid for the pair of them.

probably a touch over priced but as i said , jaws look hardly used compared to some of the battered vices ive turned down.

and NEW no where near as good irwin record chinese vices no 3 and no4 are 120 quid plus each

will do loco but thats how i got em and im sure my workshop is warmer than their previous home.

Trail Rat, No 4s are great vices, it should be easy enough to strip, clean and regrease. As you say there is no comparison between the Made in England quality and the imported ones.

I graduated to a 75 which I picked up when the Stromness Academy was relocating and the metalwork teacher and fellow Vintage Club member was selling them off. I still can't believe that someone specced such awesome vices for a school without someone raising an eyebrow as to their cost.

The number 4 is too big for my bench just now but was greedy and took both since ey are rare up here.

He had another number 4 but twas very tatty and heavy used compared to these 2

I have to say I'm very pleased with my Stanley Vice. The rotating base thing is really handy, used that quite a lot with cutting / tapping these steel tubes:

They're not bolts. They're the shitty screws that were bolloxing up his nice screwdriver bits. 🙂

Footflaps, top tip, use cutting fluid when threading, tapping or drilling. It preserves the life of your dies taps and drills keeping them cool.

I knew I'd get comments on those, but to be honest they're perfectly adequate and I doubt I'll ever get round to buying some bolts to replace them.

Yep, cutting oil is on the list. I wasn't too bothered about the die kit for the electrical tubing as I only had to cut a few threads and I'm done. It will now collect dust on a shelf for the next 20 odd years.....

I reckon they're screws. I even suspect they may well be Goldscrews in cup washers. 😀

They are 6x120 Goldscrews with Homebase washers.

They will rip out one day. I broke a fixed jaw casting on a modern irwin record removing a stuck freewheel. Good job it was through bolted.

cheap and nasty lump of cast iron.
but it grips like a vinegar stroker and it's got an anvil plate on the back for tapping stuff gently

When we moved into our house the previous owner had left a rusty vice in the garage.

Not wanting to waste anything I fixed it to my bench and started using it.

Last week, inspired by something I had read on [url= http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=7 ]GarageTrackWorld[/url], I decided to tart it up.

Using a wire brush to remove the worst of the emulsion paint I realise it is a Record 0. Now I need to find some replacement jaws and proper blue paint. Any pointers?

Looking specifically at me? I had a big workshop that had space for a number of benches that I intended to use them on, is the sensible answer. This being mcmoontertrackviceworld, a bit like the STW bike number formula n+1, you can never have too many nor have to justify them.

Been offered a working one circa 10 years old - 5 speed , belt drive different colour to the new tat they make. Fella wants space

Mmmmmm interested , model number ? Ballpark figure ? Definantly be preferable to any silverline - my understanding after a quick google was they were always light weight rebranded chinese equipment, likes to vibrate about the bench and nothing tightens up . Probably why the fella just wants the space. More worrying was the photo of the old one is the same as a new one with terrible reviews bar the colour - blue instead of green.

Deffo needs to be single phase 240 though , cant run a single to 3 phase converter out here ill be crucified by her indoors ....100amp fuse on the main circuit but spoke to the hydro boy last time he was here and said 60 amps is about the best we get on our street- with no plans to upgrade any time soon.

Broke 3 modern- clarke and irwin records vices in the bike shop with stuck stuff

Replaced it with a number 4 we rescued from the tip and it lasted the rest of my time there without a hint of trouble.

Have you thought about beefing up security for your vices? Maybe leave a few bikes unlocked next to them as decoys?

The one I have my dad ( 76 ) remembers as a kid - it was bought, at the latest, in the 1940's.

Does anyone buy vices new? Someone must, but I never have - Bill's Tool Store in the Barras is the place I go to for stuff like this. Last time I was there I got some ex-MOD V-blocks for £20 and a lovely big ex-MOD machine vice also for £20.

They also had some massive Eclipse vices, up to 8" for about £100ish.

I had no idea there was such an active market in 2nd hand vices. Although it seems they are collected more than used.....

Oh I definitely use mine a lot - the 4" Record (genuine Sheffield) is used for all wheelbuilding and wheel-related tasks, and there's a no-name 5" one that gets used for framebuilding - that'll be replaced by the Swindens I've just acquired.

Dismantled my old vice last night , found out why i had to tack weld the rotating casting

The casting for the clamp had split through the clamping bolt holes.

Real nasty looking casting full of inclusions and air bubbles . Not surprising really.

Yep, it's missing one. Mine was the cheapest 150mm I could find. Probably good enough for what I'll use it for though...

Tbh thats how i work as well , buy the cheapest reasonable item , if i use it often and it breaks i replace it with something better.

Big ticket items i tend to spend a bit more to get something good first time.

At least if i dont use it again either the cheap item can be chucked/given away or the expensive item sold at not much of a loss.

I figure you have to use something a bit to figure out what features you like / need and then maybe upgrade to something better. That's really why it's just screwed down, I wasn't sure what position to stick it in with the rotating head, so I figured I'd just experiment a bit and move it if it didn't work out well. Plus I need to fit a mill and lathe on the bench, so it may all move again at some point.

If anyone is looking for a Record vice I have a couple hundred of them sitting here...
