I've come down with a stinking head cold. It's not stopping me do anything, I'm at work, all that stuff, but I'm doing Hit the North on Saturday.

How can i shake it off in time?

I've snotty and headachey.

LOADS of ginger and garlic! you can't really make it go away, but you can help make it feel better... I find ginger and garlic really clears my sinuses.

paracetamol/pain killer of choice and coffee half an hour before the race 🙂

I'll be there. hopefully having fully recovered from sunday/monday's suspected food poisoning.... yuck!

Eat well, drink plenty of water and sleep lots.

Minimize stress on your body so it can use all energy to recover.

Oh, MTFU while your at it 😉

If you are still struggling with it at the weekend DO NOT RACE! hard exercise with respiratory infections is linked to sudden adult death. People just keel over and die. Its not worth the risk.

Not much you can do to get rid of it but symptomatic relief. Paracetamol for fever and aches, decongestants for blocked nose - but beware decongestants have rebound effects - once they wear off you can be worse than before you took them.

What MF said.

LOL. I think post-virus stuff can be nasty tho.

Personally I wouldn't be riding but I don't subscribe to MTFU, maybe I'm a girl.

depends on what stage you are at, but a forced cycle commute when it snowed did wonders for my manked up nose, throat and lungs!

A coffee and chilli enema normally does the job.
Let us know how you get on.

Our house has been plagued by this this winter. On the advice of the pharmacist and the quack we now swear by Olbas oil .Bowl of hot water ,few drops of Olbas ,towel over your head and get stuck in .Needs at least 5 minutes to be effective .Usual stuff for headaches etc .Would echo the race advice though the other week when i was like it a few hours riding on the Quantocks did wonders .
Fresh air is the key i never got anywhere near as many when i was delivering post .Now i work indoors it's germ central .

Eating un-cooked garlic supposed to clear out the lungs and as another benefit nobody will want to come near you on race day!

Beachams cold and flu tablets just before the race.

Ive done it last year.I felt like crap on the warm up lap so I took two tablets. I thought i would start as fast as i could then see how long i could hang on before running out of steam. I managed to hang on and lead from start to finish but beware the after effects are not good. I was really spun out and light headed after the race. i wasnt very well at all for a good week or more. It really effected my fitness so beware!!! i wont do it again

Al - there is a clear link between exercising with a respiratory infection and sudden adult death. It can act as a trigger factor. Its a slight risk but one I would not take.

Pook - have you died yet?

If you could arrange it so that you do start the race, then I hope there's someone I can finish ahead of.... 😀

I am just getting over the remnants of a serious bout of man flu, All I have to do is get rid of the chest infection.

Nearly there though, only got a couple of days left of amoxicillin

If you die we'll name a bit of the track after you.

PMT again Al? There is a known link. I cannot get any full citations as I don't have access to them. Its a slight risk but it is present. a significant % of sudden adult deaths during exercise have had a viral respiratory infection in the weeks prior

"Arrhythmias and ST segment deviation during prolonged exhaustive exercise (ski marathon) in healthy middle-aged men "

"However, cold climate conditions and symptoms of respiratory infection may increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmias."

Conclusions: Prior cardiovascular disease, smoking, and a recent episode of fatigue or flu-like symptoms are associated with an increased risk of exercise-related acute cardiac events. Athletes and physicians should pay careful attention when these factors exist or occur.

Sod it. If I die it'll be doing something I enjoy. And then I'll be immortalised too

Just try not to die on any of the carries, otherwise you'll have a whole load of people trampling on your grave....

My cold won't bloody shift either. Took the afternoon off and curled up in bed shivvering with a napalm strength Lemsip.

It had better go by Friday as i've got a race to set up.

Do you look like a woodland animal of some kind? That would make it easier for us to sort out a chainsaw-carved statue in the event of your death.
If you look like a squirrel, ace. We've got one of those already.
