Has anyone got any experience getting a bike back from Athens to the UK? I'm planning a bit of a tour and while I can get my bike out to the start, I'm not sure how to get the thing back without buying a box somewhere in Athens, which will be time limited and potentially hit and miss.
I'd considered contacting a bike shop there and organising for them to strip and ship for a fee.
Any tips from your long distance travellers?
post a bike bag out to athens to be collected at the post office? Buy a roll of bubble wrap when youare out there?
I've just done something similar with a bike shop in Warsaw - we were cycling from Helsinki to Warsaw so couldn't take boxes with us. I emailed a few bike shops near our accommodation (in English and with a google translate copy in Polish underneath) asking if we could have four bike boxes. We arrived quite late on Saturday and were leaving early on Sunday so one agreed to leave them with a pub next door for no charge and we put the bikes in them ourselves.
All went well, except for the pub being really good and we all got trashed before riding the bikes 4km to the hotel with the boxes. Some handlebars got bent and some blood was spilled...
Yep call/email lbs out there or find an expat bike group and arrange a pack up session at the shop in exchange for cash/beer
