My lawn is crap (note I never post pics of my bikes on it)..sparse grass, weeds, lumpy soil. I've tried seeding it etc to no avail.
What would it cost to get it seeded professionally or turfed? 15' x20' approx.
Why re-turf? I use a company called Green Thumb. They visit every three months and treat the lawn, seems to work lawn was a mess before treatments. Before they treat they assess what is required and treat accordingly. They also do one offs ie re-seeding but sorry don't know costs.
Had the same problem with our lawn. Tons of moss and weeds, patchy bits, we're under trees at the bottom of a valley so it doesn't get a lot of sun. We had a gardener round to sort some other stuff out, and asked him about the lawn. He told us that the best cheap way to fix it was by mowing regularly (once a week throughout summer) and leaving the clippings on the lawn. It looks much, much better now.
If you're not in a rush, you could save yourself some cash and try that instead.
Another vote for Green Thumb here from someone north of the border. Scotland is very hard on lawns and they do need a helping hand to look there best.
start with a good lawn rake and a general grass feed then keep on top of it , if possible use a decent mower with a back roller and use it regularly twice a week is best or look on gumtree my son got yards of turf free to uplift or call me in to sort it out
Tried feed, scarifying, over-seeding etc..
Will be in touch at the time if nec bigal.
if you've tried all that, it sounds like you need to improve drainage
I used these last year to do my lawn: -

Delivery was quick and they delivered twice what I needed 😯
I'm not sure you'd be up to the graft involved in sorting it out. I'd say get someone in, rotivate, get any shite out, maybe get some loamy top soil in and turf it. That's what I had done last year to the wilderness that was our lawn. Had to religiously water the turf for a couple of weeks. Has come up a treat. Looking forward to enjoying it this Spring.
How much does the Green Thumb cost? Tempted.
What aspect is your garden? Does it get much sun during the year?
It can be really hard keeping a garden looking well if it is perpetually in the shade.
Interesting comment about drainage. How long has the lawn been lain? If people have been walking on it for years then the soil structure could be knackered and grass needs sun, air, water and feed to do well.
South facing but overlooked by wall & trees = no sun. Pish drainage too.
DD I am not sure what you are trying to imply, I am not shy of hard work.
My mum did green thumb and it just made her grass grow like crazy but not improve.
i work for greenthumb , where are you based .

You are a lawyer or solicitor are you not? Office hands an' all dat like.
Ah no, sorry fella, was just teasing. Missed a smiley in my post 🙂
Shade and poor drainage is your problem then and I reckon the soil structure is knackered.
If you want a lush lawn then strip the existing turf, rotivate/dig over the soil and add some drainage, re-turf or seed and then get Green Thumb in to do your maintenance (it would be a shame to see all of your hard work deteriorate over time and it will as that is what happens to lawns).
As for the price of Green Thumb, my front and back lawns are about 120m^2 all in and it costs me 120 pounds a year. Some may see that as expensive, but I like having a decent lawn to complement the planting in my garden 🙂
there is a grass seed called canada green which is pretty good in overlooked areas

Me too 😎
Al, with regards your origional question. It'll cost about £85 for the turf, £15 for the rotorvator (a days hire) and many trips the amenity centre to get rid of the old turf.
Feb / March is the time to get it sorted, plenty of watering and a bit of feed and your done.
Cheers KS that sounds like a good option - do-able over a weekend?
grass will only start germating [if seeding] when ground temp is above 6 degrees C , If turfing best doing from late march onwards , consider putting some decent drainage in before turfing if waterlogging is a problem
