"You mean the death of unsustainable loss-making industries? The North East is a better place now than it ever was. I grew up there and lived through it - coal was a corpse that was being propped up by subsidies that would have never survived."

Hahahhahhahhahhahhahhahhhahhhahahhahhahhhhahahahahahahahhahahhahha!!!

Have you ever been to Easington Colliery? Hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!

Surf-matt - you have previously stated that you work in your wife's PR agency....

If we both applied for the position, assuming it had been advertised, if I was better suited, would I have got the job, or would your connections give you an 'unfair' advantage?

So 'success' is not all down to graft and determination, is it?? Some people have an 'unfair' advantage.

If someone gets shut out enough times by this kind of situation, or see it happen to those around them, they may become embittered? Maybe some of that is fueling the dislike of Thatcher?

It was a dump when coal was being mined - it is a dump now.

I think Surf-Mat is demonstrating the things I said earlier about Thatcher's legacy was one of selfishness, Mat's alright and f*ck the rest. Unfortunately he doesn't appear to realise that owning your own house and a bling BMW a tory boy does not make. You are not part of their club, you are being used by the tories to feather their own nests, and when you outgrow your usage, you will be sh4t on from a great height. They are taking the pi55 out of you and you don't realise it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

IIRC wasnt it other fuels that got huge subsidies during that period. I recall Scargill saying if Coal had the same subsidies as NS Oil it could be mined and given away free and still turn a profit!
Coal may be dirty but if its employment is not replaced by something else then I suspect many communities would welcome its return.

idave - it's our PR agency actually. In fact I do the majority of the work and ran it solely for 6 months while she was on maternity leave. Profits stayed level that year. But we work as a unit - whether she set it up (actually we both set up in it's current form) or not, it was from nothing. The fact it has worked out simply means it's a target for the have-nots. If it hadn't, it wouldn't matter one jot to anyone here.

Don - oh no they won't. We are government proofed. Please tell me how they will sh1t from a big height? They can't. No debts, no mortgage. The government can't really touch us.

"It was a dump when coal was being mined - it is a dump now."

Now imagine it with mass unemployment, a big heroin problem and a school that recently closed down.

There is a Job Centre there though, for people to get really, really good employment. Probably in PR agencies.

Easy there.

I'd offer everyone a beer, but I've only got champagne(*) at home.

(*)Home made, from grapes in the garden, probably pretty rough but it gets you drunk quick.

Well if you're asking, then I'm dancing. Cant wait, and yes, I know she's a dementing old woman, but I cant forget what she did to MY community, and I'll never forgive. **** her. As I mentioned on here a while back, I have an unfortunate sense of having been here before. After the 84 strike, I lost my job as a miner, but trained as a nurse, and have been more or less happy since. However, now we've got another Tory government in power, guess what? Yes, redundancy again. Dont believe the lie that there will be no cuts in the NHS.

Surf-Mat - you miss the point every time, don't you? Is it deliberate, or did *WHOOSH* it just go over your head?

Well if you're asking, then I'm dancing.

Matt, apologies if I got it wrong, but I'm sure you suggested that it was her agency to start with?

And I'm not coming at this from a 'have-not' point of view - quite the contrary. I've just lived enough to know that things are never as simple as any particular political view would want it to be.

In PR you must know about 'managing perceptions'??

Easington shows the same issues I saw when fishing dies in North Shields and shipbuilding died on the Tyne. Once the men realise that anything other than coal mining isn't women's work, they might get their heads around doing something other than mourning the death of the Big E and move on. I'd bomb it, but other communities like Consett (not lovely, but better than it was) moved on when their big employers closed.

Perfect, you don't pay tax and you don't have a pension. Absolutely govt proof? You've already helped them by [s]being suckered into[/s] buying a house and paying interest and charges in the belief that that is one of the most important objectives in life. You appear to be measuring success in fiscal terms, interesting.

Isn't that the whole Thatcher thing though? Money is the thing, and fek everything else. Then them that has it can call themselves better than anyone else, whether they worked for it, were born into it it, stole it or just had a wife who was more successful than they were doesn't matter, they are a SUCCESS according to the one measure they are capable of using.

Don - while I would love to bow down to your sense of moral correctness, we don't own a house. We literally have no debts as a mortgage IS a debt.

We plan to buy one soon outright therefore avoiding any interest payments.

But of course, we pay a fair bit of tax - both personal and corporation. No issues with that.

Yes yes TJ and Cameron WON the election didn't he? Hey it earns us a decent living and it benefits our clients hugely. So they hang onto us for years and years.

Elf - whilst I agree that ton's 'Mollycoddled titty-fed ****s' has a certain pinteresque quality, I feel it is a little naive when placed along side of such masterworks as 'nazi cockweasel' or 'whey faced poltroon'. And when do I get MY invite to the STW wedding of the year?

Well they might not in terms of your house and debts but rising unemployment in your area or strikes on public services will affect you as will you not bagging those big contracts when companies scale back during a down turn.. ๐Ÿ™„

Can you not see further than the ramparts of your castle??

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. As that'll take the 'Quote of the Month' award, surely it should be ineligible for the honour of 'Quote of the thread'?

You pay rent, no? That means you have an on-going monthly accumulating debt. If you don't pay it, you're out of a home. Unless you're such a huge success you still stay with your mum and dad. Which would explain a lot.

As an aside... I assume then that you rent, and that this is costing you money. This is money that is not paying off the capital on a property that you will one day own. This means that you're payments are potentially making worse financial sense than just paying an interest only mortgage.

Thatcher:

there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first. It's our duty to look after ourselves and then, also to look after our neighbour. People have got the entitlements too much in mind, without the obligations.

everyone pays for poverty, even the smug rich like some people here. everyone has to suffer the crime that comes from poverty etc etc.

The fact it has worked out simply means it's a target for the have-nots.

Perhaps we target you for what you say rather than what you earn? Perhaps we just have a greater sense of fairness than you and think that wealth and opportunity should be spread out a little more fairly. Perhaps we think personal wealth is not the route to happiness and dont need to prove our worth to others by pumping iron and kicking @ss. Perhaps we are just trying to develop your social awareness whilst you focus , so succesfully, on your ego and body.

Sir Mark Thatcher said she was "chirpy" and in "good order" and had been talking about the Spending Review.

I bet it perked her up no end!

Funnily enough, we've thought of that. We pay a very small amount for the place we have, and we claim a chunk of it back as office rent.

There is no way we'd even get an interest only mortgage that would get anywhere near what we currently pay in rent both personally and through the business. It's a no brainer.

Meanwhile we save and save and will eventually buy outright. Yes we'll have paid a lot of rent overall in the end but it's meant living in nice places ideal for us and the little one while our business gets a cracking location for an office. And we'd rather pay rent to a landlord we know and get on very well with than to some tw4ts in a bank/mortgage company.

Sounds like these mortgage companies and bankers could do with some good PR. Mat, get them to give your missus a buzz.

Might I suggest you ask the trouser wearer before committing to anything.

What would you actually be if your wife didn't employ you?
