It's the biggest and brightest full moon in 20 years this weekend.
By complete chance I accidently bought a big old russian 1000mm mirror lens earlier in the week.
Just in case it's cloudy tomorrow, here's one from tonight...

I did try some shots with a 2x teleconverter but couldn't actually fit the whole moon in. ๐ฏ
Well captured, but it's still just the moon unfortunately ๐ Maybe you should fit the 2x and then wait for it to be further away...
I suppose I could have backed up a bit.
It's not that detailed - I can't see any Clangers at all...
Rachel
Lol!
Anyway you don't have to take the whole moon - details are great. Get the 2x on and zoom in like you won't be able to for another 20 years.
Wait a minute.. is that 1000mm on your Oly? So 2000mm, then with a 2x... ๐ฏ
my effort from tonight 70-300mm Sigma

Yep.
I need a better tripod.
4000mm worth of zoom.. cor. Is that in any way practical?
Can you take some more general pics and post them up next to kit lens shots of the same scene, so we can boggle?

With a seriously heavy duty tripod, maybe. Not sure what for though.

I'll see if I can do a 14mm vs 4000mm next week sometime.
๐
I wonder if I can use this as an excuse to persuade Mrs Grips that I can have a tripod. I want one of those angleable ones for macro work. Not sure if it'd work as normal tho...

Espionage, surveillance and voyeurism.
So sleeping directly on a branch of a fault that has flattened several towns in the last 150 years would be unwise. Hmmmm.
Just out of interest what setting are people using to take these photos. I have never had any luck while taking photos of the moon or stars.
Nick
I stuck mine on A and iso800 and let the camera do the rest, which turned out to be 1/500 shutter speed which was around what I wanted for my wobbly tripod.
Lovely photo but it won't matter how much zoom the OP has he aint going to get a picture of a clangar. They don't live on the moon but in a little blue planet...

Its a lot easier if you remember you're photographing sunlight. so although the sky is dark the moon that you're taking the image of is reflecting daylight, I normally use around f11 and about 1/60 of a second and iso 100 ish or more normally auto iso on my Olympus E3.
Best thing for it is a tripod, a cheap ebay remote and a delayed shutter release to stop mirror shake.

Failing to do moonrise justice on Saddleworth. A great sunset was going on the other way. Didnt know which way to look. You'd never guess this is two stops under exposed, damn field camera.
molgrips = class
Isnt that just at the top level with the blokes elbow, perhaps if I did a bit of crop it would get it if a little fuzzy

Thats blatantly snow not cheese
I was out taking some pictures last night. It's amazing how fast the moon moves when zoomed in loads - using live view to focus properly you could actually watch it move across the screen. Spooky...

Yes to see the hot girl next door ๐
I've posted this here before, but I think it's cool enough to repeat.
Mate of mine took this photo of the moon with a webcam in his back garden a couple of years back. (Click the image for a full-sized view...)
I normally use around f11
it's pointless stopping down to f11 to photograph the moon when you will be focused at infinity, you will not be getting the best out of the lens either.
you will not be getting the best out of the lens either
Depends on the lens innit.
Depends on the lens innit.
yes most perform best at 5.6-8 diffraction is usually visible at f11
Going to give it a go with my 400mm prime, thinking ISO100, f/8 and something like 1/125, might up the shutter speed a bit though.
On my very stable albeit heavy old manfrotto 055CB tripod, spot metered, remote and mirror locked up then see how it goes.
tonights effort, at F11 funnily enough

Just out of interest, what focal length was that taken at?
I'll go and have a go when baby grips is asleep if it's still clear. What do you think about flash? Shall I aim directly, or bounce it off something? Venus perhaps?
Oh btw can you post the full images as well as crops?
Just out of interest, what focal length was that taken at?
300mm on a 450d, so a bit longer as its not full frame
I tried with a 70-300 lens handheld and it didn't come out very well ๐

down the garden Ski, not much light polution in the NW Alps ๐
Wow, not far from me either RD (Worcester here) funny how those NW Alps mess with the local weather ๐
it's all in the altitude, down on the flood plain the air is more moist i expect
just went out in swansea. couldnt see it ๐
Here's my effort - don't have a proper tripod, tried to lash the monopod to the balcony but not that good still, so I tried to sharpen it in PS.

And here's a shot taken last November in the US. This was hand held so excuse the quality, and it's portrat, but you can still see the difference in size:
