A after 2 eye watering quotes for a Hacker kitchen, what are the cheaper yet high quality alternatives? Ideally I'd like the same look with lesser expense. What should I be considering?

I would go for a German heritage kitchen.
The tricky question though might be what sunglasses.

What were you quoted?

If you have someone to fit it there are some "supply only" places that offer decent discounts.

Try http://www.pricemykitchen.co.uk and http://www.alarisavenue.co.uk/

I've used these for my last 3 kitchens. Amazing bespoke kitchens for the price.

Are these German kitchens better quality than the Cooke and Lewis stuff from b and q??

Anything is better than Cooke and Lewis.
Although I'll rephrase that.
An untrained chimp could design/sell/sort out problems better than most of the employees that work there.

I'm a kitchen fitter by the way.

Personally think the Cooke and lewis stuff is on par with most. Definitely better value than the John Lewis stuff

John Lewis own brand is mostly Mereway. Buy at a big discount from Alaris. We had a Mereway kitchen for 10! Years and still looked like new - mich much better quality than the Diy shed stuff or Magnet.

My wife is an ex (posh/'high-end') kitchen designer who also did a furniture design and cabinet making degree. Her key to a quality kitchen is the fitter - get a top notch fitter lined up and whatever reasonable quality cabinets/frames etc. that you buy (trade can supply most things) will be fantastic.

I also fit kitchens, the design studio I work for mainly supply Mereway, Keller and Leicht Kitchens which are all great kitchens depending on th style you're after.

I'd not touch a B&Q (Cooke and Lewis) Not great quality IMO fitted a few but I'd always steer customers away from them and towards Howdens if possible for lower cost options.

DIY kitchens.

Despite the name, they are very good quality (made by ultima)

pineland.co.uk

we used this company and they are great, they make to your spec so you're supporting a UK manufacturer and buying direct - their fitters are good too but you don't have to use them, they will do a cabinet delivered price, painted or unfinished (I would have them paint, it's a good spray job)

and very transparent pricing compared to Howdens which I got annoyed with their 'yeah will quote but actually this is all negotiable' approach

I was even talked into wooden worktops, which I was dead against but I now like, osmo is the winning solution

My Magnet kitchen is 15 years old and still looks like new. Only maintenance so far (after 14 years of use) was to sand down and re varnish the beech worktops as they'd started to stain a bit around the sink.
