Looking to have one of these installed an noticed that the guide widths vary in size. There seems to be a healthy cost difference but is it correct that the wider widths (90mm rather than 70mm) are more secure?

Assuming a 'premium' brand and fitted rather than ebay and self-fit.

Ta

Depends on the attack mode. If they're prising it open off the floor then the guide width won't made any difference, it's how tough the motor lock is before it gives way and lets them lift up the shutter.

Ok, so the 90mm guides better for a front on sledgehammer type approach? Assuming the extra cost must have some reasoning behind it?

Extra guide width is no use if it can be prised up. When we looked at this recently one major manufacturer was marketing the wider guides as an extra defence against weather.  When we asked them about security and queried the ease with which it could be prised up they said it wasn’t supposed to be secure (odd for a garage door!). Best to look for one that has some sort of security credentials if security is a requirement.

90mm guides often have additional seals within the guides which prevents wind, dust and critters getting in. Some 70mm guides don't have any seals at all. Mine didn't so I had to fit them afterwards.

All the ones on industrial units seem to have massive bolt locks through the bottom lip which lock into ground anchors, thus making them very hard to prise up unless you can angle grind off the locks.
