I had a wheel bearing replaced on my van in June at a lcal garage at a cost of just under £200. They supplied the part.
It was noisy within weeks and knackered within a few months. I finally got them to replace it today and have the feeling they are going to try billing me for it, the labour at least.
According to this I should have nothing to pay.
Especially this bit -
If the garage fits a part that turns out to be faulty and it has not been fitted very long, you may be entitled to a refund or you could ask for the part to be replaced. You can opt for a repair as an alternative and still retain your right to a replacement or refund if the repair is unsatisfactory. If the part fails within the first six months it is the garage that needs to prove it ‘conformed to the contract’ (was not faulty). You are entitled to have it repaired or replaced as long as it does not cause you significant inconvenience or take an unreasonable amount of time. If repairs are inconvenient, or will take a long time, you may be entitled to a partial refund or to rescind (cancel) the contract for the work. Remember that fair wear and tear is not a fault and not the responsibility of the garage.
Anyone have direct experience of similar?
Yes . . . When I ran a Garage this would have been replace FOC, no questions asked. I'd then attempt to recover my costs from the bearing suppliers - or more likely just give up when they want to make you jump through a million hoops.

there cost and if they object explain that you will pay and see them in court
For such a cheap part its not worth their time defending this in court as it will be at least one person off work to attend which will cost more than just fixing it for free
We would also have replaced FOC
I've had the issue loads, if there is no sign of accident damage I.e huge ding in the wheel rim from a pot hole or curb then no cost to customer warranty for parts and labour.
Cheers chaps.
I've had similar in my own line of work, supplying and fitting a hearth which cracks within a week. Just have to suck it up and keep the customer happy.
I had our local 'friendly family' business replace a part with a part which was itself faulty. The failure wasn't found however until much more work was done, and I'd gone to the Main Dealer with the car still faulty. They replace the 'new' part and I delivered a letter by hand to the local garage telling them we expected a full refund for all works (and quoted the law), and that we didn't blame him and expected he would recover his costs from his supplier. They paid promptly.
Run a garage too.
I'd replace the part FOC too, no doubt about it.
I can say 100% though what has caused it. Much like bike bearings for cars you get good wheel bearings and budget ones that cost peanuts.
I'd put money on it a budget bearing has been used and its gone wrong.
I tried a few of said budget bearings on cars and its not worth it, half of them are rough out of the box, the rest once installed (correctly) have play in them. Total crap.
