How do I go about lending my car to a friend to use for a day. Can he just put my car on his insurance for the day.

phone his insurer, phone yours, see which does the best price (your car on his insurance or him named on yours).

You'd need to add him to your insurance.

probably easier and cheaper to just get a short term cover policy. loads of companies offer it now from 1-28 days.

He can put your car on his insurance for a day, last time I did this it cost about £7 for a day (was 15 years ago mind).

If he's full comp ... he may well be third party on yours without charge.

I'd always recommend adding them to your insurance. If they do add your car onto their own insurance, make sure the insurer know it's not his car.

That is an option if he has this cover but you'll have no damage cover to your car if involved in an accident.

that's a good point, he may even be comprehensive on any car (I was offered this at renewal for peanuts - driving any car fully comp up to £20k).

Add him to your policy.

He has no insurable interest in your car, so adding it to his policy could get messy if he somehow did have to claim (tbh the insurer should be turning him away anyway)

You may find that some Insurance Companies want a bit more than £7. Most have a £35 admin fee that they like to apply as often as possible.
Last year I tried to add a friend to my policy that had 6 months left to run. The friend is in his late 50's, has maximum no claims, no convictions and lives in the middle of the countryside. My insurer wanted £150 to add him as a named driver!
His insurer added me as a named driver on his policy for £35.
When the usual renewal game started this year I told my insurer that this was the main reason for not renewing. That and the fact that their quote had gone from being the cheapest to double the cost of a policy with better cover.

... if it's his fault.

The "cleanest" way of doing it is just to go with one of the one day specialist policies - cost is about £20 ish.

If it's in his name there's no liability on the owner of the car / the owner's insurance, no matter what happens.

It also avoids a lot of potential aggro because if something does happen the OP's car would get sorted no matter what and without any impact on the premium the next year.

Most Driving Other Car cover on fully comp policies is third party only cover on the borrowed vehicle as standard. If you want piece of mind, either add them to your policy for the required days or take a separate Day Cover policy on the internet, lots available now.

No, he'll have no damage cover if its third part regardless of fault. If it's non-fault he may be able to claim from the third party but that's not 'cover' per se and depends on the third party having cover and agreeing it's their fault.

depends on the car. I bought 1 day insurance when I recently bought a new car (my insurer was closed, i was buying on a sunday and forgot to sort it out in advance)

Cost about £40 on an E class estate

Didn't ask about my history, just said that I couldn't have had more than 2 accidents in the last 5 years and had to have a full licence. Guessing it's based on the car you are insuring more than anything else

If its for a one off get a stand alone 'day-inurance' policy. If its likely to happen more often then add them to your policy but the value of that depends on far you are from renewal - there'll be a cost for the addition and a fee for altering the policy and both those things will be the same whether you've got 11 month or 1 week left to run.

Also if its a one off.... theres not much difference in price between the cost of a day-policy and paying for a hire car. So unless the point is you need him to drive your car for you (rather than loan him a vehicle for his convenience) it might just be less hassle to hire something

One day policy for my Transit was £25 two years ago.
.
If it's a cheap car just use the 'drive other cars' bit of his policy if he has it, bit of a risk in a posh car though
