I am in the mood for something along the lines of Chinatown or LA confidential. What should I consider?

The Big Sleep or The Maltese Falcon.

Bit more modern?
North By Northwest, Vertigo or Rear Window.

I was looking at gangster squad, not sure its quite the same, seems more of an action film may be lacking the intrigue and detective elements.

Doesn't have to be a guys in trilby's type film.

Are you looking for more of a thriller element?

I will probably get shot down for this but Jack Reacher might be worth a look. It really wasn't what I expected. Action..yeah some but might keep you guessing too.

Yep, a good thriller with a bit of action in it.

Seen girl with the dragon tattoo, found it a bit disappointing, wasn't a bad film, but with all the hype I was expecting something special, and it failed to be better than good.

Good thrillers are hard to find. Mesrine is definitely worth a watch

Delicatessen, hmmmm it is about 20 years since I saw it, and it was good.

Children of the lost city... done in the same vain. Maybe not as good.

La Jette. 1969, Chris Marker and only 29mins but worth it.

Heat? Or the original LA Take Down?

I agree with Ron, however it is a bit different from LA Confidential though.
