Hi All,

We're planning on taking our camper van to France for 3 weeks in May / June - plan is to spend around 5 days on the SW Atlantic Coast, before moving on to the Pyrenees. We're considering taking the Santander ferry on at least one leg or may drive down from St Malo. If we get the time we may be tempted to head onto the Med, but we're going to play it by ear.

It'll be our first extended trip with the little 'un (who will be 10 months then) , although he is already used to lots of adventures. We'll be taking boards 'n' bikes but it's primarily a family trip.

Sooo...has anyone done a similar trip or have recommendations for campsites? Specifically we'd like:

A child-friendly campsite on the Atlantic Coast (Eg Gironde) with good facilities and preferably walking distance to a surf beach and with some family cycling opportunities. We've previously visited the area SW of Bordeaux around Cap Feret / Archachon which we enjoyed a lot and had loads of forest trails suitable for riding with a bike seat / trailer.

A mellow, scenic campsite in the Pyrenees with similar child-friendly facilities (perhaps with some cheeky, quick blast, biking opportunities nearby ;-))

Thanks in advance

Jon

It's been a while but we stopped at this campsite for a few nights on our honeymoon.

The staff were very friendly/helpful , plenty of things for you to do and very close to the beach also some heavenly restraunts close by too.

Carlos - thanks for that -looks just what we're after. It's actually only a few km from where we stayed last time - we were renting a villa on the Baie d'Arcachon side of the peninsular. In fact I think I might have surfed the break just down from the campsite... I remember an unfortunate incident with a naked German popping up out of nowhere on the sandbank!

Stayed at La Garangeoire in 2008. It was very nice. A chateau type arrangement with lovely pools and isn't Butlins style. It's located away from the beach and is very tranquil.

Just drive to where you fancy, pull in at the tourist info and ask / use a guidebook or sat nav POIs. French campsites are uniformly pretty good, and you'll never be stuck in a camper van.

You also avoid having to be at XYZ on certain dates, and can take diversions as and when you fancy.

tron - thats exactly what we've generally done, but with a 10 month old baby, we're really looking to stay a bit longer in places.

Hi, for what it's worth for anyone interested in the Drome area of France, try this www.lamagerie.com It's in a place called Roche Sur Grane, has miles of trails many of them signposted.
You can get the TGV from Paris to Valence and hire a car to get there.
I've been many times. The pro teams often stay there and train there. In fact 10 years they ran their equivalent to our National Points series' last race there. They had one of the worst storms in history the night before, but it still went ahead. Lovely place
