I'm in the middle of reading a book all about what these two did to those girls in Gloucester. Never knew a lot about it, presumably because he killed himself awaiting trial. The book is damned hard to read because of what they were doing. Almost unspeakable behaviour, I have to keep getting away from it all.
I'm never normally affected by such things, and I was very slightly involved with Peter Sutcliffe. Anyone else know much about the Wests?
Why are you reading it?
why the F would you wanna read about those two. Now go down boarders and buy yourself harry potter LXXXIX 😉
and how were you very slightly involved with Peter Sutcliffe? They caught him down my old road.
No, but my cousin's husband was a social worker in Glos around that time, who resigned becasue of some nasty things that didn't lead to charges.
And I had met one of the victims at a party, & my 17 year old g/f at the time used to hitch that section of motorway regularly, by herself. (Hitching was common at the time. The Wests were one of the reasons lots of people stopped doing it)
I dont read about monsters and WTF does I was very slightly involved with Peter Sutcliffe. mean?
Ex Copper? Accomplice? Prostiture? What?
Why are you reading it?
The guy who wrote it has recently died, and I read his obiturary in the paper. It mentioned that he had written the definitive book about these two, and as I knew little about them I thought I'd d have a read. Book only cost £2.25 on Amazon.
Spent a year living opposite them when I was a student - boy do I feel guilty about letting my g/f (at the time) walk home at 5a.m... fortunately nothing happened to her.
Apparently, there is a load of untold stories about the Wests.
At the time my mother worked with the wife of the tall ginger plod who was digging up the house (if you look through old news footage you will see this guy...unmissable!)
Roumour has it that more scary and hideous shinnanigins went on than was originally detailed in court and through witness statements.
Rumour has it that Fred had a 'book of names' of influencial people who used to 'use' his and other girls for weird stuff.(Politicians / QCs / Police / Peadis etc)
Rumour also has it that Fred was about to squeal at trial and 'died' suddenly by hanging...quite convenient just as he was about to take the witness stand, and no embarrassment to anyone in a high place or part of the 'establishment'!
Fred and Rose = A reet pair of nasty ****s and weirdos!
My mates mum reckons she got picked up whilst she was hitching by him...there was a woman in the front seat, between Gloucester and Cheltenham...nothing happened, but it was shocking what they did and got up to right in the centre of Gloucester!
Alot of heresay no doubt, but there is never any smoke without a little fire burning somewhere!
There is definitely more to this story than has been told !
GSter, what happened was horrific enough without people spreading rumours which can't be substantiated in the slightest.
I'm more worried how many stw'ers were some how close by all of this, what are the odds????
What I find intruiging is that Rose West still insists that she knew nothing about it and had no involvement! mmm 4 bodies (however many can't remember now) found buried in her old houses, daughter "vanishing" whatever love! people talk about Myra Hindley being a beast .. Rose West makes her look like a pussy cat! all horrific shocking crimes though and so said to read about. I find some books like that interesting, looking at things from the psychological perspective.
If you are interested in true crime, read Colin Stagg's book about the Wimbledon common murder now that's interesting. . different side though (and he didn't do it).
The Wests only got tried on the ones they knew for sure ie.bodies found ,evidence linked etc. and there was tv prog the other week that stated there was more as he was rhyming them off but Fred ,under lawyers instruction, was told to say no more.
The evidence seemed to point out Rose as being far more involved than was made out but she has kept silent about it and Freds dead anyway and she is in for the rest of her life so why bother dragging more up.
Vinnyeh........For legal reasons, I quote 'rumour'..........when there are gruesome realities unknown in the public domain currently.
There are people who were told more. This is not speculation!
So climb down from your high horse fella, wake up and smell the freakin coffee! !
What legal reasons?
different side though (and he didn't do it).
You've spoilt the ending now!
I was living on Cromwell St (No 6 if you must know) while they were digging up the bodies @ No 25
TBH Fred was one of the most normal type of person living down there at the time!
The first picture of him in the papers was sold by the owner of the house next door to me (Fred fitted a kitchen earlier that month)
Talk about coincidences.....according to this morning's paper, the guy who defended Rose West has just died, apparently still believing in her innocence
Did anyone read that Viz comic where you could order your very own
d
West, teddy bear!!! or other master criminals in the figures of Teddys...very funny indeed.
So we started off with someone who's reading a book that makes him wet the bed (but he can't stop), and we trawl through the rumours, half truths and my mum's cousin's husband heard stories and arrive at a teddy bear.
Brilliant!
OMITN (whose best friend at university was reading sociology, part of which was a course on criminology that resulted in a tutorial trip over the road to Durham Gaol where he saw - but crucially didn't recognise - Rosemary West.)
I was questioned during the hunt for the Yorkshire ripper
At the time I was seeing a girl in Keighley & travelling there every Friday from the North East & back again Sunday morning - I had some energy in those days 🙂
The police at the time were convinced it was someone from the NE so my number plate must have popped up on their radar
Fred worked for my father in the 70s. It turns out he fiddled his piece work records, which was handy after Fred's first court case (the one where he got a slap on the wrist for kidnap, imprisonment etc). Apparently the shop steward expressed the opinion that the workers didn't want to work with old Fred any more. They had thought he'd been making it all up (about the girls he kept in his cellar). I guess Fred kept quiet about his hobby after that.
