The missus has insisted we do do a stop over on our way back from Italy this time and not kipping in the van.
Can we just turn up or do we need to book in advance.?

We always used to check ahead a week or so before to make sure some dog show in Auxerre wasn't going to fill all the rooms (happened to us) but then leave it until a few hours before, once we knew where we would be by 9pm and call ahead.
Have also just rocked up on spec and that worked OK.

Most of the time you can just turn up but popular ones at popular travel times (eg en route to the alps at weekends) do get fully booked. They are quite easy to cancel IIRC so better to book then cancel if you aren't sure.
