Considering a Transit Custom van which apparently are being offered with the Powershift auto soon. Seems to be mixed views out there like with the VW DSG. Any real world experience of them in other Fords? Cheers

Not a patch on dsg imo. Test drove a couple and ended up sticking with manual on my focus. This time around looking at a Passat the manual box wouldn't even get a look in. New Mondeo is supposed to be an improvement though, not sure if that will hit the transit though.

Not sure how much difference it makes in the real world but on paper the power shift kills fuel economy.

I have the power shift box in my 2.0 TDCI Focus. It's not perfect but it's very very good in my opinion. Changes are buttery smooth - the only time it's not so good is at very slow speeds, if you get off the gas as it wants to change up its a bit clunky as it decides which gear it wants to be in. Economy, well approaching 50mpg on a motorway run, normal day to day trips gives me 42. I love it and I'll certainly have another one.

However - there is an issue with the power shift on the petrol engines - there is a seal that fails and let's oil into the clutch pack. Diesels don't suffer as they run a wet clutch. They may have fixed this by now though!!

Powershift is a dual clutch system like dsg.

We have a 2l diesel Kuga with it fitted and really like it. It's occasionally sluggish on pull-away but you can put it in sport mode for a bit more revs between changes or flick between gears as you see fit (never bother)

I agree, I've never seen the point of manual shifting, the car can do it far better then I can!

Thanks, had a Passat dsg which was a bit jerky at slow speeds pullling away but once on the move was great. Sounds similar to ford, guess I will test drive when they come out in the transit (diesel)

I am reliably informed the custom will be epicyclic and torque convertor not a twin clutch

Had Galaxy with Powershift gearbox. From new up-to 30k it was impeccable ... then started to notice a bit of slipping from 1St-2ND gear. So if it's from new and you're decent driver and mechanically careful then it's a good option. Mine lasted 53k and still went strong with other owner, while on average those boxes last 80k before torque converter goes.

They don't have a torque converter. Powershift is a "normal" six speed gearbox which is electronically actuated with a dual clutch system that pre-selects the next gear then electronically shift the cogs.

According to Fords web site the Transit Custom will have the new Selectshift transmission (in 2017) which according to Ehow is a dual dry clutch DSG system.
