Seen some people with big pieces of foam padding type things they use between bikes and wheels when stacking them inside a car, and just wondering where you'd get them from.

not pipe lagging?

I've just used old towels or old blankets/rugs before.

yup old towels here too, also comes in handy for a wipe of the bike and dry the cold water off my head that I like to pour over myself after a sweaty ride.

Cheap thin duvet and Ikea blue bags or Garden recycle bags for wheels. I also have two black cheap sheets that I throw over the top of the bike when inside the car, just to cover up unwanted gawping when parked.

A cheap thick blanket like removal firms use; ours is covered in oily marks and does the job perfectly. Anything is better than having valuable bikes displayed like trophies outside the car; I've even seen people driving around in empty campers and vans with a bike on a towball rack FFS - if that isn't a fashion statement, what is?

Rant over. Carry on.

camping roll mats? I bought a cheap one from decathlon to use a bike bag padding.

If you need more, some carpet cut off? I wouldn't use underlay as it'll tear.

erm, because a dirty bike on top of the bed isn't ideal?

I use old curtains in the back of the van. They hang over the bike and stay in position pretty well.

Treat yourself to a new duvet and downgrade the existing one to bike duties.

I dunno. I've never seen tow-ball racks as fashion statements. You seem oddly chippy about them though. Bad experience?

You can get them.
Halfords do one and here's another:

But we use pipe lagging instead.

How do you know they're empty?

But as Jon said, mine goes on the rack because I can't be arsed to deal with a winters worth of frozen mud on the bike, defrostint and fall off in the back the car, repeat twice weekly until the layer of mud becomes deep enough to grow a spring crop of potatoes.

Packing blankets? Offends my sensibilities to pay money for what's basically an old blanket but they are good.

Basically anything really 😀

One I saw the other week looked like big foam mats with jigsaw type ends to them, guess to join them together if needed.

Actually, forgot that I'd done just this and happen to have not thrown out the old duvet yet, so that'll do it 😀

Old Karrimats and two of my auntie Rita's old rugs.

Usually looks like I'm about to bury a body on't moors.

It's a bike shroud. Took us ages to track down who makes them. We have four which we put on the bikes and just load them in the camper garage side by side. Done thousands of miles driving with them in the back and no rubbing on any parts of the bikes at all.

Made by RB Sails based down on the south coast. They make them for the bike importers who use them to transport their demo fleets.

Evans use them but couldn't get them to sell me any

They are indeed, they're used by removals firms to cover furniture and anything else that just needs protecting from scratching. I've got a couple that I 'liberated' from a place I was working at that had been used to stuff into large boxes of books that had been sent from their publishing wing for storage and filing, and as they were no longer required for their original purpose, I felt they could be put to better use than going into a skip.
They're really heavy duty, made of recycled scraps of cloth, that looks like it's been minced up then rolled out and heavily over stitched in a zigzag pattern. Each one would cover one of my bikes, with overlap, and I used them when camping for extra warmth one cold June weekend as well.
Make good picnic blankets, too.
Hardly expensive, 80"x60" for £4.05 - http://www.packingboxes.co.uk/removal-blanket/
Found these on eBay, a bit more expensive but proper wool blanket, and a fraction of the price you'll pay for wool blankets elsewhere -
