I suppose I'd better be thinking about replacing my much-loved old Rotel FM tuner with a digital separate to fit into the system... Any ideas?

squeezebox transporter.

or if you don't mind the different form factor - squeezebox touch.

very good DAC and, with high bit rate streams, better quality audio than DAB, plus the ability to access other online and networked content (like your own music on a NAS/Computer or the past week of BBC radio from iplayer).

Where did you get this info from? There's going to be a lot of car owners in Currys buying those RDS tuner add on's if that's the case.

If they did ever turn FM off (which I doubt they will for years and years), then that would enable them to massively increase the DAB transmission power which is kept low to avoid nobbling the FM signal.

2015 is the "target date" for analogue radio to get the axe.

From that link^

No mass-produced cars contain DAB car stereos

I had a Ford Focus hire car the other week with one, granted it was a posh version, but I don't think it'll be long before it becomes more standard.

I had a factory-fit DAB radio in a Vectra at least six years ago (as well as in the Mondeo I have now). How old's that article?

Either way though, FM's not going anywhere for a while yet.

No VHF?

(on a point of pedantry, LW is a form of AM...)

My car has a DAB radio.

It's a golf, which I think counts as mass produced!

The FM channels sound a lot better though....

Can't do, there's no 6Music. The only thing on the radio I'm prepared to listen to.

I thought DAB was dying and being replaced by DAB+ or some such nonsense?

I wouldn't bother, unless you're looking for something to spend cash on.

I doubt FM will ever be shut down as it's just too useful due to three things: 1) the massive number of recievers in use and 2) the low power requirement of FM, 3) it's reliable, with very little infrastructure compared to listening online etc.

As a result, all kinds of contingency plans will be screwed up if the government can't rely on communicating with the masses by FM radio.

FM is not going anywhere just yet, we have just spent millions relocating fm transmitters onto several new masts we built at Oxford tacolneston caldbeck and elsewhere as part of the digital tv switchover
From I wouldn't class it as low power, horrible nasty rf up close
