I've just experienced that flying through the air , can I hold it, yes or no, this could hurt, close eyes moment.
Just built up an old frame, found some local woods had been modified by some youths, I admire the handywork as I climb up, but got a real close look on the way down. Classic front wheel tentative muppetry over jump.
Kind of reminds me how old age has made me far more risk adverse. Did bounce well though.

You just don't heal as quick as you get older!

Argh don't tell me your crash stories I haven't had one in years, in fact the last time I remember crashing I was in my early twenties, shit actually Im still in my twenty'ishes... and if its true about not having a crash in ages means my next will be very very painful I'm really not looking forward to that bloody day.

did you wear much protection?

If your not crashing regularly your not going fast enough or big enough.

🙂

As I found out the other day: crashing isn't the problem. It's the rapid deceleration provided by the intervening obstacle that was my issue!

Last year I remember commenting to a friend that I hadn't crashed in ages. 20 minutes later I was picking the remains of my body out of a pile of boulders and wincing at a whole new collection of grazes needing to be scrubbed clean.

Nowadays I still crash, but at much slower speeds. 🙂

I've had only one crash on the FS bike so far (practising manualling off kerbs) but I'm riding faster overall. Which suggests it's a skill compensator 😉

Sorry there was another one when I popped a small lip too much and the bike flew off in front of me and my bum impacted the dirt!

Due to a back injury I havnt been on a bike for over an year now!! But having just built up a new shiny bike for my fiancé. We decided to both venture out for our first proper ride together (this had to be via the pub of course) 😉

I'm there with all the gear (she would say and with no idea) and her with my cast off's and assembled bits from the CRC sale! we set off together full of the joys of spring and looking forward to our mini adventure together.

Being the type of man that I am and whilst thinking to myself, I'll show this girl how to ride! I throw my leg over the top bar and stomp down hard on the pedals. With a broad grin on my face, we set off at a pace that I believed that Steve PEAT would be proud of!!

With my chest puffed out and with the manliest pose I could muster, I turned around to make sure that she hadn't chickened out at seeing my new found turn of speed.

With all this bluster going on, I failed to notice the rapidly approaching and particularly inoffensive curb that was now looming into view!

In a sheer moment of panic and with as much aplomb as I could manage, I try to put my foot down....BUGGER me I've forgot that I'm clipped in!

With the grace of an 18 stone ballerina (complete with tutu) my right knee hit the deck first!

Despite still being clipped in and having the bike on top of me, I tried to soldier on! but all I ended doing was thrashing around like a wounded duck!

To make matters worst and I must add to my horror and shame, not only did I get unceremoniously get dumped on my arse right in front of my fiancé. Who it has to be said was keeping up with me 😳 but my bloody my neighbours all seemed to be out in the street washing their cars!!!!

I don't know which hurt more, the two inch square patch of red raw skin on my knee, or my pride which I hasten to add is now severely smarting.

I've not yet decided which one is more effected but I'll let you decide......

Now that's something I would pay to see!

Sorry to hear about the crash snapper, I've had worse, there hasn't even been a curb in front of me to make me crash. Once for some reason a new bike that had arrived that day thanks to the insurers! I tightened everything up and went out for a ride, I was only young then (my excuse) ... then suddenly as I went down my road the stem along with the handlebars came loose and as I was still holding them decided it was a good idea to brake hard!!! ...still to this day I don't know why. I came over the bars so quickly I blinked and it was all over, landed on arse right onto a nice large metal grid in the road..luckily for me only one person was outside, I'm sure all my other neighbours were watching somewhere, somehow 😯 It haunts me to this day!

What was really odd, was that as I fell through the air I had time to think;
1)Goodness, this brings back memories.
2)I must remember to roll.
3)I'm all alone and my wife will have no sympathy.
4)Damn why is it always the "short blast in local woods" with no pads that catches you out.
My middle age spread on my left side is now slowly turning purple.

[:)]

Thats what I always thought, until recently its the exact opposite, had 2 complete numpty crashes one is a fantastic bit of singletrack caught the gf up as the looked twice at a drop over a small fallen tree, so I waited and thought i'll leave a bigger gap, hopped back on ambled towards the small drop got distracted and went over the bars whilst thinking "you complete tw*t why are you going so slow over this it will only end in" bang crash scraped arms (elbow pads protecting my camleback) and hip.

then few weeks later went to have a play on the nice shiny 4x track here in Camberra got to the bottom just managed to get out of the way of the whopping great launcher that clears you over the last bridge if you are that way inclined looked round to get a better perspective then got to the drop which on my casual walk up looked probably rollable if needed the repeat before thinking "you complete tw*t why are you going so slow over this it will only end in" bang crash

this time in from of everyone in the car park lots more scrapes

riding down stanage, full pelt, feelign good, hop over a pile of rocks, aiming to hip it a little and land sideways using the edge of the path as a berm.

I got a little over enthusiastic and over jumped it. Bike went off the path, and i ended up landing on my side like a sack of spuds. Few ibuprophen and carry on, thats todays crash over and done with..................
(i clearly am trying hard enough, its not a ride without at least one unplanned trip into the undergrowth!)

Onto bamford clough,

4 up through the gate and I take an early lead, pedaling furiously (remember this is bamford, pedaling is entirely uneccecary). Hop the water bar, bang!

My pedals hit the ground and being time ones the impacts opend upt he spring and released my foot!

Nchance of getting a foot back in (i'm doign 25mph+ over rocks at this point) no braking (cant get my weight back as im ballancing on one pedal.

FEK this is goign to hurt, aim for the edge, then bang! My front wheels nosedived of a drop and and I'm flying through the air, resigning myself to the fact that this may well be it (Russ Pinder springs to mind, and his accident was on a not so steep or rocky section!).

I dont realy remember any pain hitting the ground, just watching a bit of my helmet go flying past.

Apparently the guy following was coming round the corner at the time and saw the end of the crash, but wasnt able to stop and ran me over, but i dont remember that.

First thing I remember is lying face down on the ground screeming as all I can feel is my legs on fire, they weren't, but the track had riped just about every square inch of skin off from above my knees to ankles.

Must be something in the air...
I had my first proper off in years a month ago and I can concur that it really does hurt. 🙁
Thought I'd broken my wrist, turned out to be tendon damage but still bl**dy sore, kept me off the MTB for 4 weeks too still managed to road bike but that made me realise how many cattle grids we have round here.. owww!

Had two pretty good crashes recently, both over the bars - one in Grizedale resulting in some nasty cuts and grazes on my leg, plus broken glasses and propedal lever, then one yesterday on a tiny inoffensive jump in the alst stage of the avalanche enduro in Kielder, where I landed on my head.
