Prompted entirely off of the back of watching the trailer for:

got me thinking ...... where a film has been rebooted who has played the better version of the character?

The decision to cast Cedric Diggory as Batman looks like it may work better.

Others such a DC as Bond are Shirley worth a consideration and Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker.

I've lost track of who has played Spiderman but Mark Ruffalo has been the best Hulk.

Does the reboot always have a better actor ............ ?

It's interesting how, in all the Batman reboots, the 'look' has remained the same; the vehicles, costume, all that.

What? Yet another actor playing Batman?

I mean, why? Its frankly sacrilege...I mean George Clooney's was definitive...

Starbuck - as much as I loved the original and always wondered how Templeton Peck could be in space AND running from the US Army, I have to say the reboot Starbuck was much better.

Not a movie but a definite betterment.

I don't care for superhero guff, but...

Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker

Bloody hell he was good in that, and the film was much better than I'd expected from all the hoo-hah about it.

Karl Urban was infinitely better as judge Dredd than Stallone

Just thought, did that ever even get released? I recall seeing various photos and possibly a trailer what seems like years and years ago but don't remember it ever actually being launched (though I'm no super fan so it's entirely possible it just passed me by)

He was Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter film IIRC.

Cedric Diggory

Blimey, that took some looking up! He was in a Harry Potter... Who'd a thunk it (being an adult I've never watched a Harry Potter)

Matt Damon was the best bond.

David Niven was the best Bond. Or Peter Sellers.

The trouble with reboots is just that they are telling almost the same story, but with flashier effects and/or a different focus on the character. If you are playing against a really strong, cult or well done original, you're going to need to Michael Bay it or do something amazing to justify the advertising and pull in the money. Dune is a good example. Cult classic original with a cast of legends. How do you top it? DC's Bond in Casino Royale took the series back to a grittier, bare bones film from the later, crazy Piers Brosnan films.

On the subject of Batman (and ignoring the certainty of Adam West being _the_ Batman), Keaton Vs. Bale is a good argument. Keaton had that little spark of insanity and madness that worked really well in the first film against Jack Nicholson's Joker, but the Baleman was a more overtly action-bat-man. It was far less comic book than the Keaton film and I am not sure I liked it more for that.

I wonder idly whether there's tending towards a 1:1 relationship between "better reboot actors" and "better reboots"? (and ditto with the many, many worse ones)

Well if the recent one is to be believed, you make it look like terrahawks.

Wasn't that a reboot of Fraggle Rock?

It's deffo not always linear.

Someone mentioned Spiderman? Tobey Maguire was the best Peter Parker, Andrew Garfield arguably the best Spiderman, but Tom Holland nails it if you look at the character overall (and that's then complicated by the fact that my childhood live action Spidey was Nicholas Hammond - not particularly great but totally fired my comic book kid imagination).

+1 for Karl Urban and Dredd though - pretty much definitive.

I’ll offer two.

Jeff Bridges makes a way better Rooster Cockburn than John Wayne (True Grit)

Tom Hardy’s Mad Max. Arguably though that might just as easily be Charlize Theron makes for a better….

Funny, I think of those the other way around. Agree that Tobey Maguire is the best of both though.

As much as I fancy Emily Blunt, I don't think her Mary Poppins worked.

Me Julie all the way.

Is there a case for Will Arnett being the best Batman?

Arnie was a better Douglas Quaid than Colin Farrell in Total Recall.

And Mel Gibson will always be better in Mad Max for me.

And Peter Weller is the only Robocop!

It really hasn't. You had the Tim Burton movies which were very, well, Tim Burton. Dark and Gothic. Then the utterly camp, flamboyant pair afterwards (IMO Burton bears partial responsibility for that after sticking stupid light up hubcaps on the Batmobile in Returns). Dark Knight was more realistic and the Batmobile was actually a military vehicle. No idea about after that because I refused to ruin a good trilogy.

Robert Patinson as The Batman is out beginning of March with the director who was responsible for the most recent Planet of the Apes films - Matt Reeves (which I really enjoyed). Supposedly it is more detective Batman than any other that has been portrayed on film, also a very different stylised film. I like the look of it apart from the Batman outfit, feels off compared to others although maybe be fitting within the actual film if that makes sense.

Best looking OTT Batman I thought was Ben Affleck in terms of more recent comic look, his Bruce Wayne not so much but that could be due to him being a jaded older Bruce Wayne, who knows. I didn't like Christian Bale's growly Batman voice and did not like Dark Knight Rises much at all. I guess it was Keaton I really liked. Kilmer and Clooney batman films were just about Ok and if they were on I wouldn't necessarily switch over.

Well we get to see more Batman end of the year or next with another DC film coming out. Just in case it's spoiler territory I won't say who and in what.

Tom Hardy’s Mad Max. Arguably though that might just as easily be Charlize Theron makes for a better….

The problem with the originals was that Mel G wasn't really very mad. Arguably, he played a madder character in Lethal Weapon. And, having re-watched the first film recently, the setting looks almost normal for the 21stC, not a dystopian near future, which is what I thought they were aiming for. (The road warrior could learn from some of the motorists I see on my commute! 😀 )

As much as I fancy Emily Blunt, I don’t think her Mary Poppins worked.

My wife laughed at me for watching Mary Poppins at Xmas. I replied that I was puzzled because up 'til then I hadn't realised that I fancied Ms Poppins. /notvery21stCman

If that's what I think you're talking about it's well-publicised already?

Adaptation of a major comics storyline for one of the big DC characters? Can anyone say 'soft reboot'?

The Thomas Crown Affair .
Brosnan and Russo do a far better job than McQueen and Dunaway

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool was better than whoever tried to play him in that Wolverine film.

Peter Maximoff (X Men/Wandavision) > Peter Maximoff (Avengers)

And the Clooney/Pitt combo in Oceans 11 is a fair bit better than the Rat Pack version

Yes it is what you think with a big reset incoming.
It is well publicised I think but just in case I don't want to ruin anything for anyone

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool was better than whoever tried to play him in that Wolverine film.

Peter Maximoff (X Men/Wandavision) > Peter Maximoff (Avengers)

Not sure if the Ryan Reynolds bit was a joke?

Agree on XMen/Wandavision Quicksilver being much better.
