A colleague informs me that the test is whether or not it goes hard or soft when it goes stale. The former being a cake, the latter being a biscuit.

I like this logic, so I think you should apply it.

Cake, as they dry out when they get old rather than go soggy, which is the case for biscuits.

Proven in court (see jaffa cakes and VAT)

I don't really care, they are delicious whatever they are especially the home made ones Mrs Tuffty makes 😉

possibly need their own classification but if we have to decide, quite soft and I think they might go hard when stale (complete conjecture I have never knowingly let a fig roll go stale) so I'm going with cake.

What sharkbait said.

But then fig rolls don't go stale, or, indeed, even if they did would it be possible to notice?

I say cake though. Biscuits are flat, fig rolls are roll shaped.

Tomatoes are sold as vegetables but they're fruit. The, they're sold in the biscuit isle theory is flawed.

I was thinking cake, per the VAT case, and being a HMRC employee.

Glad the majority are with me, a month if just Jaffa Cakes would have been just too ....orangey!

the biscuit isle

Wow, I thought being in the biscuit aisle in the supermarket was fun, a whole island of biscuits must be amazing 🙂

Tomatoes are sold as vegetables but they're fruit.

So are olives, which is what you get when you confuse the horticultural/scientific definition with real life.

Fig rolls are biscuits, sciency customs definitions be damned: cake needs to be cut with a knife, and can't be dunked.

What about a beefcake?

And while we're at it can someone clarify the situation re. sausage rolls?

Savoury snacks have different rules. For starters you don't dunk them in tea.

cake needs to be cut with a knife
cup cakes, fairy cakes, fruit buns, french fancies, macaroons etc

Granted my favourite cakes do indeed need to be cut with a knife (or just gnawed at while driving home from a *big* ride) but it's not a very good RoT

So you're not eating biscuits for a month, why not just eat cake? Proper cake, not frig rolls!

A fig roll is a biscuit by guilt of association, biscuit isle = biscuit..

May the Great Gods strike down the cakeist heretics!

And blessed be those who see the biscuity light.

You infidel biscuitists will feel the cakey wrath of the enlightened cakeist believers on the day of your biscuity doom..

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not including it in a fruit salad.

Oh, and let's not get started on that well known murdering psycho the Gingerbreadman.... Is he cake? Is he biscuit?

Biscuit! You can eat them at any time of day, not just with afternoon tea.

More faulty than San Andreas that logic. Cake or biscuit can both be eaten at any time of the day. (So can custard, rice pudding and other sweet things).

When scaled up to the size of a diner plate would it seem wierd to have it in slices?
Digestive? Yes
cup cake? No
Jaffa cake? No
Fig roll? I think yes

Therefore Fig roll= biscuit

Changed my mind!

On reflection I reckon a slice of fig roll would be alright. So fig roll=cake

As you were.

Fig Rolls are neither cake nor biscuit. They are energy bars and a vital part of any serious athlete's diet.

If I was stranded on the biscuit isle, then Jaffa cakes the size of dinner plates would be my luxury item on Dessert Island discs.

Hmm, a fair point. convert has nearly, er, converted me with his scaling idea - but a normal size jaffa cake is still definitely in the biscuit camp, even if a full size one would be cake. Might have to take a trip to the local supermarket to do a bit of research.
