right apologies for this!

several months ago it appears i drunkenly agreed to sing at my missus's best friends wedding.

Her group of friends are all ex media students who love performing (ie lovies).....

I do not perform, and am definitely not the most confident person in the world. I get stoned with my guitary mates and occasionally sing, it always sounds ok to us .... I specialise in introverted, often a bit miserable, slow ballads, radiohead and nick drake angst filled ditties, not really wedding material tbh

any hoo Lauras mate has even picked the bloody tune, she likes Annie Lennox so I have apparently commited to singing Annie Lennoxs's Why as part of an hour long "Cabaret", in which all her mates are doing something, stand up, singing etc.... after the meal, before the band starts. FFS

I was "reminded" a day or so ago as they have just had the schedules printed, I have a fortnight to prepare and am told that I have to fill about 3 minutes and can have amplification on the stage.....

i am sh1tting it quite frankly.

So anyway this my attempt, check out the link below, for your perusal, feedback, advice, mockery etc welcome.

advice would be usefull on the arrangment, i think it needs something towards the end where it seems to run out of steam.

I think they have a sound guy who should be able to mike me up.

oh and yes its rough quality as its recorded on my phone (very quiet!), and yes i sound like a bird.....

sounds alright-ish.

Personally, i reckon on the day you need to add a bit of chorus and reverb to the vocals to give it more depth, and also to sing with a bit more power, as it could sound like James Blunt on temazepam otherwise. Also, if you can, drop the treble and add some more bass to the mic balance too.

Inept??? In - flippin - ept?

Something tells me you have nothing to worry about!

Should I post my classic 2007 rendition of Wonderwall for comparison?

You'll go down a storm mate now stop this blatantly needless plea for sympathy and go knock em dead.

Damn! Was expecting to be able to have a right go at you, it's not fantastic but certainly not shite. And yes if it was Simon's Wonderwall then you'd certainly not be welcome at any other weddings other than to provide comedy relief.

Well you have to make the most of what talents you have, and I would just like to say if anyone is getting married and is after an accoustic singer/songwriter/guitairst with a comedy twist I am available for bookings in June although i have to say I can only play Wonderwall, Chasing Cars and I Guess God Thinks I Am Abel plus a couple of my own tunes which I wrote around chords i know how to play. Surely Wonderwall is a great wedding tune?

Hey, I've been asked to play/sing at quite a few weddings over the last few years so I can truely sympathise! (I'm not much of a 'performer' myself)

You sound great though, tbh if all the others are 'lovies' 'performing' and you just get up there and sing that - you'll probably, in a very understated way, steal the show. I know you probably don't really even want to do that, and the idea might even scare you more, so I shall suffice to say - that's definitely good enough and I'm sure your mate will be very grateful she asked. Oh and try to enjoy it - you might surprise yourself...

(Oh and to pkripper's: he recorded it on his phone! Lighten up)

MM, derrr!

mine was purely advice for making it sound the best on the day. If you want to lovey-it-up and just say "oooh darling you're brilliant as you are", fine, but even on poor recording equipment you can figure out which bits could be tonally enhanced through the amp set-up.

Tim,
Sounds pretty good to me.
Your guitar playing is fine, and you have a good tone to your voice.
If you could just deliver the whole thing with a little more confidence it'd be great.

SB 🙂

His comments made me laugh, I'm sure he had visions of Tim sitting in Mike Oldfield's Studio.

Tim as Simon says I don't think you have too much to worry about.

If I am to be critical it sounds just a tad slow to me and raising the tempo may in itself make your voice sound more powerful - but I know **** all to be honest.

if you are single and you sing like that at the wedding, i don't think you'll be going home alone 😉

Perfectly adequate and agree with all the above, especially re confidence. But I far preferred this;

I listened to it to the end which is a good sign 🙂
I agree with stratobiker, delivered with a bit more confidence and it'd be great!
I'm very jelous btw, i'm annoyingly incompetant at playing my guitar and singing at the same time, it feels like rubbing your stomach and patting your head but 10 times harder to me 😕

I am in roughly the same boat as you tim at the moment, I have agreed to play a short set before a mates band (who are very good) but I have not performed for years and when I did it was with a band and I could hide behind them. I am pooing myself! Fancy chipping in for a bag of courage and confidence!

Honestly? - I think its really good, some nice guitar playing and a tuneful voice
I play guitar and sing (a bit!) and have done for 10+ years so I know how hard it is to record something that sounds half decent - well done!
To improve:
- practice the tune with a metronome - you did slow and speed up during the tune and this will help solve the problem
- practice singing with breathing from your abdomen - this will solve the problem on the chorus where you don't have enough breath to extend the "Why" bit
- if you're really serious about doing well take a couple of singing lessons to solve the second point above - well worth it and it will mean that you sing with slightly more volume and sustain

Overall, I'm well impressed and you will do well on the day - good luck
