We will be in touch
After five years of use my 23" Apple monitor needs to be repaired. Or so I thought.
Apparently not.
"Out of warranty is it? Nah, Nobody will touch them and Apple won't fix 'em...too complicated you see. You'll be wanting a new one then..."
😯
It's not very green, is that.
Just thought I'd share.
What exactly's gone wrong with it? Five years isn't too shabby from an LCD monitor, especially since the cold cathode backlight has a limited life anyway.
True dat. I've had this Samsung for only about a year or so, and it's already looking a bit iffy. The light does not in any way seem to spread evenly across the screen. Ok for basic use, but I need to replace it soon, as it's getting difficult to get colours to display accurately, which is quite important to me.
Nowt's built to last any more.
I blame her....
Annoying. Hopefully the new led-backlit lcds will fare better.
Its not often you see IT and green mentioned in the same country is it, I mean really, there's no realtionship at all is there?
Still annoying though.
Backlight's at the top of the screen has gone.
Screen is dark at the top but for the time being still usable.
The LED light at the front is blinking away telling me it's all gone horribly wrong...
It is HER fault...
Is the LED flashing short-short-long repeatedly?
Cold cathode tubes do fail. but inverters are a likely cuprit too.
As you have nothing to loose, open it up and see if you can identify the inverter.
Might only be that.
Next time go for a non-mac PC! This will give you the chance to swap bits, upgrade, choose from a wider choice of software, fewer device compatibility issues and save the hefty premium you have to pay to own an Apple product.

*sigh*
I have an Iiyama that's going fine after ... 8 years.
I have successfully replaced the backlight from a laptop before. Only to find that it was the inverter and would cost more to replace than the laptop was worth.
flaperon, yes - short, short, long.
The back light is er not back lighting no-more.
Spongebob, nothing to do with the Mac.
Teh screen is borked.
IIRC short-short-long is the error code for a backlight issue. Unlikely to be the inverter, especially if one tube still works. Might be worth whipping the back off to see if you can get a product number off the backlight tube, and search Google / eBay for it. You'd be surprised how much stuff you can replace via the net.

Not sure if they'll ship to the UK, but for $19.99 it's considerably cheaper than buying a new display from Apple...
Thanks Flaperon
I'll need to find a way to open the monitor up without knackering it.
There is no obvious point of entry at all anywhere on the outer casing.
Thanks retro
I'll need to look for instructions highlighting how to remove the backlight itself and replacing it with something compatible.
Then doing all this without destroying it and then buggering off to buy a replacement .
Although the HP24745w does seem very nice!

Er, It's seems to be working again ❓ 😀
Er, It's seems to be working again
Ah a visit from the computer fairies! I love those guys 😳

Switched on this morning and no flashing LED and no dark band at the top.
Bit confused to be honest...not that I'm complaining.
Just weird.
It's essentially an ultra-bright fluorescent tube, so as it approaches the end of its life it will start to behave erratically. Suggest that from now on you don't switch it off. 🙂
Er...switched it off. Bugger....oh well. 😥
Looks like you will want to environmentally soundly dispose of it....to me... 😀
It either works intermittently or it is really borked. Although only 1/3 borked. So that's something...
You may pick it up in person, for not an unreasonable fee... 😈
How not unreasonable? 😉
