So they don't 'faint', they have a muscle condition that means muscles fail to relax - I.e. they fall over but don't lose consciousness. It's caused by a chloride channel anomaly (single gene mutation) that responds weirdly in response to some stimulus (adrenaline IIRC?).

I think the theory is that this only occurs in domesticated animals, since as you say it would be evolutionary disadvantageous in the wild. They'll be selectively bred for certain other traits and this condition doesn't affect the lifespan of animals in captivity so it's not selected out. There's also some suggestion that they can't jump as high (perhaps due to the same mutation) and are therefore more manageable as livestock.

I saw some in real life in California. Oddly, the owners didn't let people shout at them to make them faint. Now I've written that, I wonder if I was scammed into paying to look at some goats?

all the people I’ve ever met who’ve suffered from narcolepsy have all been bass players. Not sure whether that’s some sort of evolutionary trait. Does make them appear to have a keen appetite for stage diving.
