Sounds grim and bizarre - suddenly accelerated into the back of the team truck 😥

Hope she's OK

What were they thinking, letting a truck get that close to where a car was still running.

I presume they presumed she wouldn't accelerate from a standing start into the back of a truck.

Let's hope she pulls through

I dont imagine the truck transporter was mobile, they use them along side an awning as a temporary pit garage when doing tests, demo events etc. Sounds like a freak accident. Announcement at 1400 according to Twitter, lets hope it's good news. Fingers crossed.

Bit presumptious, but if the news was good, would they be withholding it and scheduling the announcement?

🙁

Maybe the anti-stall caused it to lurch forward. Hope she's not too badly hurt. 🙁

edlong, exactly what i thought. Surely if she was well they'd just say so rather than schedule an announcment. Fingers crossed it's good news.

Not seen any updates yet on Marussia or Twitter as a whole.

Ignore the fact it's the Daily Fail, but pics here.

Not sure she will get access to a laptop while getting a brain scan.

Planet F1 have updated their story, with a less dramatic headline. Stable is better than 'life-threatening'

According to the Antonio Lobato (Spanish Murray Walker) she's conscious.

This where you need to look for anything Motorsport !!

http://www.crash.net/f1/news/181512/1/de_villota_conscious_after_accident.html

In that audio tape you can clearly hear the engine misfiring, which means a pit lane limiter is enabled, which controls the cars speed,it will have been in first gear,so not particularly fast, although lorrys dont move, shes been lucky...

This has a better pic (second one)
Pics

and it does look very nasty even though she may be awake now, its no indication of her actual 'health'

Life threatening facial injuries apparently, as you'd expect when helmeted head hits lowered truck tail lift at witness approximated 30-40mph.

Brilliant unit at Addenbrookes though (world class/leading) so she's getting the best.

New statement:
http://www.marussiaf1team.com/news/622/

We are grateful for the medical attention that Maria has been receiving and her family would like to thank the Neurological and Plastics surgical teams. However it is with great sadness that I must report that, due to the injuries she sustained, Maria has lost her right eye.

🙁

Maybe the anti-stall caused it to lurch forward

Agreed, possbly coupled with a some kind of clutch hydraulic failure or drag?

Very tragic whatever the cause. Only note on health and safety is that its not good practice to leave a tail lift half way up in that way. Typically they sit on the ground and out of the way (although people are liable to trip over it then), this is also how it would be having unloaded the car/equipment. It may have been left half way up as they have no steps, you step onto it (half way) and they again into the back of the truck. Again, this can be happen if steps are not present to gain access. That being said, if it were down (or up) she would have just crashed into the truck itself with possible similar consequences.

All in all though its essentially certainly a freak accident. You can't mittigate against things like this, what if it had done the same thing and ploughed headlong into the awning itself and taken out 10 mechanics? Just very very infortunate accident, which could have been a lot worse. Its a testament to the latest helmets that she is alive at all.

Potentially not a career ender, although likely to be as far as F1 and fast single seaters go, its possible that she could gain a special dispensation for use at natioanl level (touring cars etc), the danger now I think is any kind o accompanying brain injury. I really wish her all the best, a terrible thing to happen, almost inconveivable. Hopefully Dr Helmut Marko can pay her a visit and reassure her its not life over (I don;t think many people know that he only has one himself).
