Since I have chosen not to subscribe to Sky, i had to watch the F1 on the BBC. How was Skys coverage of the F1 was it worth the subscription. i always liked Martin Brundle as a commentator, and thought he may have been loyal to the Beep, but obviously not!!

I enquired and Sky make you take out the sports pack, so you get all the football and other nonsense that I've got no interest in, but the total cost of the package £55 a month with Sky (inc phone and broadband) and £62.50 a month with Virgin. Just so I can watch F1, seems a lot to me!!

So whats the verdict on the coverage?

Thanks

MM

I didn't see the Sky coverage, but given that the beeb coverage showed all but a handful of laps, and the progs they put out are still very good, I can't justify paying for Sky sports (on Virgin here) for 12 months just to watch 10 additional races in full, when I'm losing relatively little anyway.

If you read around on the web the general consensus seems to be that Sky's race commentary team slightly edged it over the Beeb, but that their pre & post race coverage was a bit cold and disconnected, and somehow didn't flow as well as the BBCs. Their SkyPad is generally seen as a bit gimmicky, and Simon lazenby seemed to be about as comfortable in the pit lane as Jim Rosenthal was. Also they ended the post-race coverage relatively quickly and didn't hang around doing the F1 Forum style thing that the BBC used to do, instead cutting to some pre-recorded shizzle.

Lots of Sky subs saying that for the beeb's live races they'll watch up to the start of the FOM feed on the BBC then switch to Sky for Croft & Brundle, then back to the BBC when the chequered flag drops.

You only need Sky and the HD pack to get the F1 channel.
You dont need sports etc etc.... so its only about £30 a month or so, can get your internet chucked in too.

To early to say really. Crofty and Brundle worked well together but Sky's presenters (and Damon Hill) need time to settle in. Crofty even brought Murray Walker elements to the commentary by regularly getting things wrong.

Race and qualifying coverage are provided by F1 anyway so you don't see any more on Sky. I can't say how the race build up was as I wasn't getting up at 4.30am to watch it!

You don't need the sports pack to get it, just the HD pack (with a basic channel package).

IMO unless you are obsessed (like me!) with F1 and can't bare to watch a race unless its live then save your cash!

You don't need the Sports package, just the HD package (which I already had). I thought the coverage was pretty good (probably because Sky bought most of the Beebs team) and there were no advertising interruptions unlike when it was on ITV.

Edit: I did miss the post race BBC red button stuff.

Well.. nearly.
Just checked and it would be £35.25

I expected Sky to flick to ads between each qualifying session but they didn't. They also didn't cut away to ads straight after the race.

That bit just before the race where Sky do a recap of all the drivers was cringeworthy (and very American). Cue dramatic music, lots of swooshing graphics, medium shot of driver as he looks up to the camera with a menacing/uneasy/bewildered* facial expression.

*delete as appropriate

Skys race commentary team of Croft / Brundle + Kravitz in the pits is excellent. They need to make better use of Andy Davidson as he knows his stuff and he is wasted covering the "SkyPad"

The pre race stuff lacked the quality banter that the BBC have honed between Jake, Eddie and DC.

Lots of Sky subs saying that for the beeb's live races they'll watch up to the start of the FOM feed on the BBC then switch to Sky for Croft & Brundle, then back to the BBC when the chequered flag drops.

100% agree I'll be doing the same!

doesn't really matter which package you need, sky wanted £55 a month, (including broadband and phone) Virgin for equivalent package £62.50 a month. And thats for the most basic TV package + F1, albeit with unlimited internet and line rental/calls. It was Virgin who specified I needed the full sports package and they couldn't just add the F1 channel.

From the BBC, I really missed Martin Brundles live grid walk, did Sky show this??

So a pretty good deal then!!

Line rental is £12 of that which you'd pay to any supplier - so you're getting broadband, unlimited phone calls, sky sports, a load of other Sky channels and F1 HD for £43! (and you'll probably receive £100's worth of M&S vouchers too).

Yes

Yes they did. I always enjoy his grid walks too. Especially when he gets blanked by some celebrity (or Alonso for that matter). Didn't happen this time though Lenny Kravitz was quite chatty!

FWIW I think the Beeb will be re-vamping the grid walk for their live races, and *may* get access to some of the people who won't talk to Brundle for various reasons. All good, as long as they keep EJ away from it!

As others have said Sky's pre and post race build up lacked something, to be fair though I missed the first 1/2 hour so I'll reserve judgement.
Again, I missed the 'forum' after the race and hopefully the beeb will continue to do it for their live races.
Commentary was good

Sky do need to dump that Skypad and give Anthony Davidson something else to do, they could leave Georgie Thomson at home

didn't have the feel it used to on the beeb. The actual commentary during the race was good on sky though.

I had Sky, with all the channels for £52.50 (iirc - forget exactly).
Worked out that the only non-free channels I was watching were Dave and Comedy Central, both of which I wouldn't miss, plus would watch the F1.

So £630 to see the 10 races I wouldn't get via BBC. Or about half that if I scrapped Sports+Movies and had just F1.

So I cancelled the lot. Fortunately it's free on RTL 🙂

Watched the Sky preview show on Freeview (Pick TV) the other day and that pretty much made my mind up not to worry about Sky. I refuse to pay more for any TV than I have to (rather go for a ride). But how many times do you need to be reminded whats 'coming up next', Later in the programme' etc? Two hour programme with an hour of content!

all the talk i found a bit much and the blonde haired bird with a big ass i could not work out why she was there apart from window dressing, what i found good about the sky f1 channel was they showed the whole program start to finish across the day so i could choose when to watch or you could just record it and spin forward.

I quite enjoyed the coverage the whole teem seemed quite good, the sky pod looked and felt really cheap/shonkey but is actually a good evaluation tool and Davidson does a good job of helping you understand what is happening in the drivers seat. Well worth the extra £10.25 a month that I pay for the HD package. we pay just over £50 a month for a couple of tv packages, kids and knowledge and also have unlimited broadband and anytime phone. Not too bad in my view.

Ah - fairly sure I can get that on analogue satellite, so pictures from that, audio from 5LSX if I'm desperate to watch live (I usually watch highlights anyway)?

From the patronisef1 website: "But just how good was the coverage? Well, at the risk of overly simplifying the situation, Sky's three-day live F1 extravaganza came across pretty much exactly as you might have expected if you already had the dubious pleasure of experiencing their football coverage. It was stylish, extensive, flashy, and yet undeniably rather bland."

Which is just how i'd describe it. Didn't like the tacky graphics, thought Brundle's Ferrari section (<5mins long) was almost pointless as it didn't seem worth the effort for the viewer.

If you know anyone who can lend you their sky account details, you can watch it on the xbox if you have one.

Cheezo,

Several times a year I get given these deals to use for friends & family, they don't cost me anything,I don't earn anything from them, the person who receives it gets ALL the benefit.

Basically all my friends and family who already have/want Sky are already sorted.
So offering them on here was to help benefit anyone on here who is considering getting Sky and trying to save them a few quid, sharing the love.

So "shitehawk" or not if anyone wants to SAVE SOME CASH let me know otherwise the deals will just end up in the bin.
