Part of Barrichello's suspension fell off which then hit Massa's helmet at full speed

They're saying he's ok but "may" have cracked his skull.

An inch to the side and he'd be dead, very very lucky

shame i like massa comes across as alright kinda guy. How it can cause a cut like that through the helmet, is a bit worrying.

Jesus, he was obviously knocked out, look at the accelerator, it goes all the way to the floor after he's hit... very very lucky

I should imagine the energy of the spring coming towards him whilst he was doing close to 200mph would be too much for any (use/wearable) helmet to withstand

I think the helmet did its job OK there. Dissipated the energy and the damage to his head was probably hitting the inside of the helmet. Just like you will still get a nasty bruise if shot wearing a bullet proof vest.

How do you work that out? The engine revs clearly drop instantly the moment it hits? Or do you mean when he hits the barrier?

If you look at the on screen graphic the green bar is the throttle and the red bar is the brake, both are full on after he's hit.

Let's hope he makes a full recovery and that there's no damage to his eyesight.

I see it, it does look that way doesnt it. But he is still gripping the wheel fairly securely (considering the terrain) until he hits the wall, then his hands drop.

I'm hoping some of the news channel reports are exagerating the statement issued by Ferrari that Massa is recovering in intensive care after the successful operation.

Considering this may be life threatening you might want to remove the picture.

He was hit in the head with a piece of metal at high speed, now has a fractured skull. Yes it's life threatening.

Why? What a strange suggestion.

Some people might find a picture of someone with (potentially at this point) fatal injuries in poor taste is all, no need to get uppity about it.

Some people need to get off the internet if that sort of thing upsets them.

wow, looks like we went out cold straight away to me. Both pedals down hard until he hit the barrier.

Couldn't even see Barichelo in the video, how long had that spring/tube been bouncing around for

I can't pull the picture (can only edit posts up to 10 mins after posting, if the mods feel its right please delete it) and in any event this thread is five hours old

He wasn't knocked out on impact, as he knocked the gears down to zero

Chunk - not getting uppity, just wonder on what basis, on what grounds an image goes from acceptable to unacceptable. I mean the knowledge of his possibly more severe circumstance does not make the picture any more or less pleasant to look at. I just dont get the "out of respect" rubbish (IMO).

Not really, it's a testament to modern helmet design that you can survive a hit like that at all. Hopefully he'll be OK.

So that's not the anti-stall or the changing surface cuasing that then?

I imagine he'd not be on both pedals and completely fail to steer (but downshift through the gears) if he was conscious.

I would imaagine if he put the throttle to the floor and the brake, the throttle would win so the car would presumably bury itself into the red and then some sort of engine protection thing would kill it....?

I think he is braking - tho probably sub conciously -- but the 'stun' from the initial impact probably disabled his ability to steer...

Listening to the audio on the video I can't hear any shifts, as the brakes go on the revs slowly drop until the impact. The engine is still running afterwards so the anti stall probably kicked in at some point.

He's been induced into a coma but expected to be o.k.
