Shite – even CAD models as well according to this tweet!…

Yeah, the CAD models of the worst F1 car in years must be worth a lot on the black market.

Sponsors - out, Stripes - in!

Look like they need to take a leaf out of Hispania Racings 'how to get sponsors' manual!...

I bet the beardy-weirdy from $hit Energy would buy them - got to have a starting point for his fictitious F1 team.....

According to Wikipedia it’s Lotus with 79 wins – Brabham had 35 wins.

I'm not that familiar with the 1950s F1, but the original Mercedes team was massively dominant until they withdrew after a horrific crash and didn't compete for decades. Fangio was the Senna/Schumacher/Hamilton of that era - dominant driver in the best car.

Nah it was a poor car last year but there have been far worse - I remember turning up early on the Friday of the British GP and watching the likes of Life and Andrea Moda attempt (and usually fail) to pre qualify. And back then Williams were fighting for pole...

This is where hyphenation is important. If it's a fictitious F1-team, that's a different thing than a fictitious-F1 team. I wouldn't put him past it to turn up with the latter.

They only won nine races in that period over two championships. Still great but not overly dominant.

How many races were there? 😉 There was nothing to touch them - only way they wouldn't win was if something went wrong.

Edit - a quick wiki says 9 wins from 12 races and both titles over the two years it competed.

Frank William’s ran some customer teams before setting up his own with his name on it...

He had two of those - the first one, he went into partnership with Walter Wolf but that didn't work out and Wolf took over the team WGPE was his second solo effort.

This is a good read:
Minardi's miraculous rebirth

Shows how dire things were when Paul Stoddard took over - and the effort getting to the grid.

Good grief, whoever designed the new Ferrari livery needs a slap. Scarlet fading to some sort of shade of piles, with an eye-bleeding slash of bright green on top of it. Are they sponsored by some brand of migraine pills?

The darker red on the rear wing looks like the exhaust’s blown oil all over it, maybe it’s to disguise the workings of their new power unit 🙂

Is that a different dark (non-purpley) red around the cock-pit area too?  Is this meant to be "Ferrari reds through the ages" or something? And the nearly-neon green is totally gopping....

I genuinely have no idea what must have been going through their heads. I thought the Williams livery was crap but this surely wins the prize for this year’s worst livery (if you ignore the Formula Kremlin entry).

Alpine has to be the best livery this year by some margin, I think. McLaren, Red Bull and Aston Martin are all decent enough, the Alfa Romeo is ok… the rest? Nah.

Yes. https://www.planetf1.com/news/ferrari-two-tone-livery-sf21/

The green bit is the Mission Winnow logo.

Yikes. That’s not pretty.

None of the current breed of F1 cars can be remotely described as being aesthetically inoffensive. Wheelbases are measured in time zones, the cars (especially this Ferrari) resemble Groucho Marx from the front aspect, weird protuberances abound.

I know that we'll never see a Jordan 191 or Ferrari 640 again and that aero performance and chassis stability must trump aesthetics, but frankly every single car on the grid absolutely munts.

Giorgetto Giugiaro's reaction upon seeing the Triumph TR7 is pretty much how I feel about F1 cars.

Apparently the green MW logo was a late addition. Not sure if it will stay as they had to remove it last year didn't they?

Might be good, had the F1 channel cheap last year but got rid of SKY this year as I didn't want to pay for loads of TV I don't watch for the little I do watch.
Was going to go back to C4 and Now TV for races I want to watch live.

Have you not watched the Rugby that Amazon broadcast? It was of awful quality with many non intentional breaks in the program. NowTV is at least continuous coverage.

Sky's current contract prevents F1 offering its own streaming service to the UK and the article suggests the same would apply to Amazon so don't get your hopes up yet. We're not rid of Sky until 24 (at the earliest)

Anyhow, testing is go! (go! go! as Murray would say)

I predict Merc to look slow, Ferrari to look quick and some unexpected midfield team to be quickest overall.

I wouldn't be surprised if its Haas this year and not Williams at the back.

Nailed on certainty. They've not developed their car much, if at all, over winter. And plan no major upgrades this season.

Williams have and a large chunk of cash chucked into them and new owners are saying the right words about getting back to the pointy end.

And last years Williams was a decent step-up from their 2019 car.

So are Mercedes sand-bagging or have they got problems?
Not looked too good today - gearbox issues for Bottas, and looking a handful underneath Hamilton.

Certainly didn’t read like sandbagging from the online updates. Let’s see where they are after the weekend; you’d be brave to bet against Merc getting on top of teething troubles fairly rapidly.

Great day for Red Bull, though: consistently at the top of the timing tables and the lap counter. McLaren and Alpine must be feeling pretty good, too, especially considering Alonso’s not had his turn yet.

Too early to start thinking that Hamilton, Verstappen, Alonso and maybe Perez and Ricciardo could all be in a solid fight for the title…?

Why are some teams only running one car? Is it just to save money? Surely once all your staff and equipment are there anyway you are as well running both cars to maximise data?

I'm really hoping the Renault, McLaren, Aston-Martin, and Ferrari are as close as last year so we can seen Alonso, Ricciardo, Leclerc, Sainz, and Vettel going at it.

So....

No runn9ng for Hamilton today? Yet Bottas seems to be dialling in the car, so with so many more laps than Lewis is this advantages Bottas for Mercedes?

And are Mercedes really so "mid pack" as they seem?

It's not a review of the year or a highlights show, though: it's a series of narratives showing the stories behind the racing. Everyone's already seen the on-track action, so unless it's part of a worthwhile story it won't necessarily be in.

I did raise an eyebrow at Steiner's negotiation meeting with 1&1 (some time prior to the Eifel GP if the episode's narrative is chronologically coherent) where the overalls were already prototyped with full UralKali and red/blue/white livery—though looking back now there were rumours that Mazepin was already a done deal around the time of the Eifel.

This is well worth a listen for anyone who likes to know the behind the scenes stuff. It's the ex-boss of Lotus talking about when Renault wanted to buy them. The whole thing is worth a listen but the Lotus/Renault stuff starts about 20-30 mins in.

I always wonder how he'd have done if it hadn't been Ayrton in the other car. Must be similar to Albon etc sat alongside verstappen, their talent must start making you doubt your own ability and once that's in your head the game is lost.

Edit - just read that interview and it seems very much like a parallel with the red bull "golden boy" situation.

Hadn't realised that Grosjean is now driving in Indycar.... the thought of him on a Super Speedway is pretty terrifying. Also as a result Russell is now director of the GPDA, seems impressive that your fellow drivers already trust you with the role when realatively young and inexperienced.

…. the thought of him on a Super Speedway is pretty terrifying.

He's doing all the road course races and 1 short oval race to see how he gets on. He's always said that the thought of racing on Super Speedways scares him.

Didn't Russell lob it in the wall last season while warming his tyres, maybe it's a pre-requisite for the role?;-)

It may be that all the other drivers know he's good and are hoping this will be a distraction.
