First off, I've put this in chat as I'm talking about jump height not getting on the cranks.

So, I want to improve the height of my jump. What's the most effective form of exercise to achieve this? On or off the bike I don't mind, either is possible. Also, improving my running sprint speed would be handy too!

I'm 12 stone and 6 foot so I can lose a bit of weight but I wouldn't want to lose much.

Pliometrics. Jump training.

Try the P90X version (youtube?) takes about an hour, but it's a tough hour.

practice jumping?

it's probably as much about technique as absolute strength.

are you trying to jump up (over something) or along (across a gap)?

Power cleans with a barbell in the gym. And that kind of thing.

Up to catch <ahem> frisbees. I play quite a bit of ultimate frisbee and vertical jump is rather useful!

Unfortunately I don't have access to barbells or anything like that and the local gym is rather expensive!

It is a great laugh and it's damn knackering too! Most of the time you're either stood still or sprinting balls out!

there was a big competition for this near me a while back (near Brighton)- 10 football pitches full of blokes leaping around trying to catch frisbees.

Have you tried googling NFL/NBA jump training as both of these sports take it pretty serious.

Plyometrics.

Anyone got a like to that BBall guy jumping two-footed over 5' with about 4 step run up?

In the four hour body by Tim Ferriss he covers improvements in jumping and sprinting, precisely because they are so in demand as metrics for the NFL/NBA.

Worth a read for this and many other bits of, often counterintuitive, study.

Quick! - eat some chips you skinny bastard, you can't jump very high because you're about to keel over with fatigue.
