Light is on will I do any damage driving it for a while? Will an "Italian tune-up" sort it?
Any other options?

Depends what the problem is. The light just means 'something might be wrong' - what to do to fix it depends on what is actually wrong.
Generally, if something goes so badly wrong that you risk destroying the engine, you get a more agressive STOP DRIVING NOW! message or similar.
