The heater blower resistor in my car (Passat) keeps blowing. The original went, would only blow on full blast. I got a replacement, which also stopped doing its thing on the first drive.
I'm guessing something else is causing this, but what would make a resistor blow? (My electronics knowledge is zilch, just trying to work out the root cause before spending more on bits to destroy).
A resistor blows because too much current is going through it. You could try diagnosing the circuit to work out if there's a fault somewhere else - or you could just fit a beefier resistor.
I presume this is a resistor for lowering the speed? If so, a. that's a really shonky way to do it, and b. fit a wirewound resistor with a heatsink, that'll do it.
Could be your scuttle panels full of leaves, the drains are blocked, and so waters pouring in through the pollen filter straight onto the blower motor. Wet motor windings short the resistor out.
Sounds like your motor windings in the blower are on their way out - check as Grimy says above, leaves blocking the intake may make the motor work harder or channel rainwater into the blower. You may need to change the blower in the heater matrix if the above mentioned is clear of leaves.
Cheers guys. I'll check for leaves later. Hopefully i'm not leaving a trail of diseased Ash leaves round popular mountain biking venues!
