Just got an offer for my first graduate job, for RBS in Edinburgh. So assuming I accept I'll be looking to rent somewhere.

Where is cheap to rent? Where to avoid?

Workplace will be Gogarburn so transport links to there would be a bonus.

I've heard much on here about the Pentland riding from Currie/Balerno. Are these places a possible location for renting a small flat?

Anywhere in the city gives decent access - it only takes an hour to cycle from one side to the the other

Gorgie / dalry might be a decent bet - right side of town for Gogarburn, plenty of rental properties, not to dull not too exciting.

I really love Leith where I live - but its the wrong side of town for the pentlands ( an hour cycle offroad to get there) and for gogarburn

Welcome to Edinburgh (if you decide to come!)

I was in you shoes recently (ok 15 years ago). Like most towns there are a few places to avoid. Some are close (ish) go Gogarburn.

Do you want to live on your own or share? Do you want to drive / cycle / public transport to work (the new tram will run just outside)? Do you want parking near your flat?

I guess it depends on how close to town you want to be vs how close to the hills vs socialising etc.

Another good website for your search

TJ talks sense, Gorgy/Dalry may not be the nicest looking areas but they are near the road/bus route to get you to Gogarburn. Parts if Roseburn area are also OK. Should be fairy cheap too. They are also within walking distance to the centre.

The beauty of renting is that you can get an idea of the city for the first few months and then move to an area which you like. Your new work colleagues may even need a flat sharer or have a cheap room to rent.

On the Pentlands side of town Bonaly, Balerno, Currie, Juniper Green, Colinton, Craiglochart if you want to ride to the hills. Avoid Wester Hailes, Oxgangs, Sighthill, Stenhouse.

Car parking isn't a worry as I don't own a car, and if I can get transport to work and access to the Pentlands for riding I don't see myself rushing out to buy one.

Somewhere with access to the foot of the Pentlands within 20mins ride would be great, but I suppose I should maybe make transport to Gogarburn a priority.

Cycling to work would be great, provided they have a shower at the other end. Will sniff that out when I get there. During my interview I passed a branch of Tesco, a Vodafone and not one but two Starbucks inside the building so I don't think a shower will be a tall ask.

I'm open to sharing or single renting, but don't know anyone to share with yet so perhaps a single bedroom would be ideal until I meet someone to share with.

I've been at a few meetings in the RBS office - it's pretty impressive. If I pass there at lunchtime I often see some of the folks from there out jogging, so I'm pretty certain there will be showers. The canal runs quite close to the RBS office so that'd be a decent commute if in town.

My office is just up the road, at Heriot Watt Uni. I live in Balerno, which perhaps 4 or 5 miles from RBS and is a very nice place to live, with direct access to the Pentlands. Currie, Juniper Green on Colinton would also be good locations, close to RBS and the hills, but I'm not sure how much there is to rent there.

Edinburgh is expensive to rent in I think - around £250 pcm for a room in a shared house and £450 if you want your own small flat.

I don't know what the transport links to gogarburn are like. There are buses that go out that way.

Other place to find flats apart from the ESPC site are
http://www.propertytoday.co.uk/Edinburgh/ or Gumtree.

IMHO Edinburgh is one of the best place in the UK to live. All the facilities of a city and small enough to cycle out of. Much of beauty in and around the city and much culture if you want it.
Disadvantages - although its a dry climate when you get the Easterly wind it is cold and its an expensive place to live - near London prices and more in some cases

I would suggest coming up for a weekend with your bike and a map and have a cycle around to find a bit about the city and to look at places to live
