What is this just emerging and how long have our tadpoles got? Kids are not going to be happy...

It doesn't look quite right for a damsel/dragonfly nymph but it is coming out of a tube/casing. The photo makes it look bigger than it is. Taken from lowland, ephemeral pond.

Caddisfly maybe?

Yeah, looks like a Caddisfly,(Trichopetra).
There are loads of different species so an exact id is pretty difficult until it pupates. Some are scavengers, some feed on decaying plant matter and some are ferociously predatory, so no idea how the tadpoles will fare.
