From The Statesman...

Under Bavarian state law, a trial of the nature of Ecclestone's can be concluded if the accused makes a payment to a non-profit making organisation, or the treasury. Such an offer does not imply any guilt on behalf of the accused. Ecclestone's lawyers made the offer believing the state defence team's case to be, in their words, 'highly questionable', and with the trial proving 'burdensome' on their client.

Nice that the law allows the rich to throw money at a problem and make it go away!

I like it...a self fulfilling court settlement - when's he getting tried for bribing the court?

I seem to recall that Jan Ulrich did the same thing to make certain drugs charges go away. It is a terrible state of law that allows the rich to directly buy their way out of trouble, it is nearly as bad throughout most of the western world, where wealth and power clearly have such an impact on law, but to formalise it in such a way beggars belief.

Basil Brush style.

You honestly couldn't make this stuff up, so the guy he originally bribed has his career ruined and is locked up for 8+ years. Bernie on the other hand waltzes away and just puts the price of tickets up again to compensate!

Bernie...I liked him when he was at Brabham. Why couldn't he have simply been pensioned off when the team folded?

Doesnt he get £10million a month for life, from his ex-wifes Bambino Trust that he "gave" her before the divorce which contains all the F1 commercial rights - so in 10 months he'll back to where he was before - instead of 10 years in jail.
ahhh the rich!

To add insult to injury he's suggesting they use the money to build an F1 track. Cheeky wee ****

court case about a £20m bribe that kept him in control of F1, a £60m payment will now drop the court case and.....

Seems Win Win to me.

Germany gets EUR100m and everyone knows he's guilty.

The opposite would've been a court case where (eventually) he may of been found guilty and (possibly) locked up at the countries' expense.

A vile little 'man' with a particularly vile dose of small man syndrome.

I don't think I could ever tire of punching his smug little face.

Pretty diabolical that he is allowed to do this. It's been quite clear all along he has been guilty as far as I am concerned, this has clearly been his strategy to settle with no conviction if he had to.

One does need to understand the German system though. There you are able to negotiate your taxes, ie the tax rate is x% but how about I pay y% (less) otherwise I'll live abroad.

No you (or they) are not. What they have done in recent years is had an amnesty for those hiding money abroad to come forward and pay their back taxes without being punished. This has been kind of linked with the information leaked from swiss banks which created a real fear that they could actually be caught. Some have even messed up that opportunity and missed the amnesty, ie that bayern munich director and friend of Merckle.

For the sake of balance, I thoroughly enjoyed his rendition of "Chicken Town".

Plus he was ace in Dr Who.

Outrageous - but no massive surprise

We all know that this type of thing goes on - but at least its in the open now

Personally, I have massive respect for the man - 83 years old, runs the most viewed annual sports event on the planet with an iron fist and like Teflon - nothing sticks!

The guy is a legend - dodgy as hell - but a little dwarf legend 🙂

Just highlights another catastrophic error by Blair - he should've got way more than a million off Bernie. Or maybe he did...

Seems quite a pragmatic, efficient solution to me.

It's disgusting. Not sure which is worse, that a self proclaimed innocent man isn't prepared to prove he is innocent but is quite happy to pay a crazy amount of money to make it all go away. Or that German law has a provision for such a person.

Maybe when you are in your 80's and a billionaire freedom is paramount. But the fact he is paying them off just goes to show how corrupt and hypocritical the system is.
