Any recommendations, much as I hate it, I've lost 4 auctions in the last few seconds by pennies, so if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

Just bid what you thought it was worth in the first place. If someone bids more, then you haven't lost anything.

Nothing on earth would make me put my login details into a piece of software who's source I couldn't see, or whos host I couldn't trust.

As said, bid more. If the final winning bid was less than what you were willing to pay, you didn't bid high enough. You're entering a maximum bid, what you pay at the end is not what you bid, but just above what the 2nd place person bid.

But you don't know how the other bidder's max bid - it could have been a lot more. All they did was bid more than you.

Others have suggested what I do - decide how much you'll pay / what you think it's worth and leave it run.

Thought there was a simple free "addon" one for firefox?

Anyone used that one?

eSnipe is "free" - they just request payment.
Used it for years without any problems.

The reason sniping works is because it keeps your interest as well as the amount you're prepared to pay secret.

I do bid the max I want to pay, say for example a bike comes up that has the forks and wheels I'm after on it, I reckon those bits are worth £300, and the rest of it is pretty rubbish stuff and largely worthless. So I bid £301.

Now, the other bid is £20 or something daftly low, so ebay puts my bid in at £21.

Then I get sniped at £301.27, they've clearly bid £301.27, not £400, not even £305 which is what it would have prompted them for if they'd matched my bid.

Happend 3 or 4 times recently and its getting boring, I may as well join them, makes fek all difference if I dont win does it, and if i do win, druids argument holds true, they should have bid more.

exactly - you don't show your hand and give others time to consider whether they want to outbid you.

Yeah shouldn't do it in April....

I'm surprised as they have an API for sniping - well maybe it's not meant for that?

Then I get sniped at £301.27, they've clearly bid £301.27, not £400, not even £305 which is what it would have prompted them for if they'd matched my bid.

But some people bid in odd amounts so if, for example, they bid £21.27 as a 'higher maximum bid' before you bid £21, the price would automatically jump to £21.27 when you bid £21. Then on, all bid will be in increments ending in .27 (ie, £26.27, £31.27 etc).

They do this because they thinks someone may bid £21, but they don't want to bid £25 (which may be the next automatic bid amount once £21 has been bid) so they put a bid in of a few pence over the £21 they are prepared to pay.

Does that make sense?
