Short question:
Has anyone flown easyJet recently and just taken the standard carry on? How do they measure the bags and would if it's one of those luggage cages could I squash a bag in?

Longer version:
I'm flying to Porto next month for a 5 day trip. My mate has booked us on easyJet which comes with a standard 45*35*20cm luggage allowance. That's not a problem and is plenty of space but I don't have a bag that fits these dimensions.
I do have a 50l northface duffle which I can cinch down to the right thickness but it's still 5cm too long. Is this likely to be a problem. Thats just empty space so if I need to fit it into one of the measuring cages it would easily go but I'd need to squash it in rather than just drop it in if that makes sense?
Anyone know if that's allowed?
The alternative is some compression straps to shorten the bag or buy a new "carry on specific bag". I'd rather do that than pay easyJet and extra £45 to check in the northface bag containing all that air

TNF medium duffel, not jam packed, fits into the easy jet "big" carryon box, that's what they use to measure it, but we were fine and weren't challenged recently.

Just flew EJ recently. Didn’t see anyone get challenged either direction, some people had pretty big bags as carry on! Not even sure anyone checked cabin baggage allowance, I.e. extra/bigger bags etc.

Are they enforcing the new(ish) under seat only bag location unless you pay more now? Or as long as the bag would go under the seat are they, in reality, happy with you still putting it in the overhead locker? Thinking as much about space for your feet/legroom.

You can still put carry on in the overhead locker

On my flights they were encouraging people to put everything in the lockers and not under seats at all, which was weird as I’m sure it said the opposite on the website!

Good to know - but as you say that's not what it infers in the info.

One small under seat cabin bag (max 45 x 36 x 20 cm)

That's good to know. There's no way my duffle will be anywhere near full and it would fit under the seat, I would just need to squash it a bit. If that's ok then that's good for me.

Leg room is a different matter I suppose, hopefully they let us stick them in the locker despite what it says on the website

Four of us recently flew with easy jet and we didn’t see anyone being challenged. We paid extra for overhead luggage but could have got away with not bothering. I even paid £20 for an easyJet specific under seat sized second bag. Complete waste of time, everyone was just putting their bags in the overhead lockers.

Yep it’s all a bit daft and a con.

In theory you now have to pay to use a locker and restrictions on size etc.

Wife just went to IoM and paid for extra locker bag. No one checked and she ended up having to put her bag in the locker at the other end of the aircraft even though she had paid

There was zero enforcement

Take your chances I guess, however last year I saw people being charged extra, but it was only 1 employee doing it at the departure gate

Flew EJ at half term, carried on rucksacks that could squish down to under seat size, no checks and everything went overhead. I wonder if, with all the publicity about airport delays, they're not bothering with anything that might worsen that at the mo?

Thanks all, will have a think. Sou ds like I can be fairly sure they will let it on but obviously there's a risk there.

In my experience they aren’t getting out a tape measure, if they check at all, it’s whether it fits in the cage at the gate. It’s the hard wheelie cases that usually don’t.

I flew to Bristol-inverness on a full flight a while back and it was full. They were checking quite a lot and charging accordingly.

6 flights with EJ recently and I didn't see any bags being checked for compliance. They seem to be much more lenient than Ryanair.

The new rule stipulates the maximum size of the bag and that it must fit under the seat not that you must put it under the seat.

I use EasyJet a lot and the new rule is to stop busy flights running out of space in the overheads and staff then having to ask people to put bags in the hold and causing delays.

Pre booking for larger carry on allows them to manage capacity. The rule isn’t strictly enforced unless the flight is near capacity with prebooked carry on then you might have a problem. If your bag is softshell and obviously not taking the proverbial should be fine.

The worst that can happen is they make you check it into the hold. If the flight is full and they want volunteers you won't even get charged. Keep a smaller bag with the stuff you need for the flight passport etc at the top.

If you pay the extra you can take two bags ie 1x larger cabin up to 15kg and 1x normal bag.

They ask you on the flight announcement to put smaller bags under seat but you don't have to.

The extra legroom seats include the larger cabin bag sometimes for about the same price so worth checking.

It depends on how busy the flight is IME. I recently flew to Mallorca, early Wednesday morning out, late Saturday evening back so not the busiest of times in the airport, but our flights were busy both ways. My friend did the booking and got us reserved seats with easy boarding which includes a bag in the overhead and one under the seat.

Going out I didn't see anyone checking, but on the way back they were walking the queue at the gate to check ticket types. Anyone who didn't have easy boarding but had an extra bag was sent to the payment desk. Anyone who did have easy boarding but whose bag didn't fit into the box was sent to the payment desk. I'd say they extracted an extra £70 or so from about 25% of the passengers.

The worst that can happen is they make you check it into the hold. If the flight is full and they want volunteers you won’t even get charged.

Pretty sure they will charge you either way. The likes of BA tend to not charge if you have to put stuff in the hold, but from what I saw a few weeks ago EasyJet were charging as many as they could.

If I were you OP I'd make sure you are not in any grey areas, or just accept that if you are you might end up paying more at the gate.

similar to the above, I've seen them checking on busy flights, and charging people who are over-bagged (to put the bags on the plane, I didn't see anyone have to put them in the hold), and making people with small bags stick them under-seat, but on quiet flights they don't seem to bother. Which is entirely sensible. If you can squish your bag into the size it needs to be you'll be absolutely fine.

yeah this is what I did! Everyone else was a skinflint though (and flight not full) as initially after boarding I had the whole front row to myself! But then a lady asked to move there as she had the misfortune of being seated in-between 2 industrially-sized gents 😀 (she wasn’t charged extra lol)

Just got back from Spain via EasyJet.
1. It was a farkin shambles
2. they charge "Priority Boarding" which includes 2 carry on items (1 large 1 small)
3. Priority boarding (aside from the luggage) is simply standing in a different queue from non-priority
4. No-one was checked
5. The overhead lockers were so full they had to put stuff at the other end of the plane from the owner
6. the flight attendant had notes on a scrap of brown paper to find the bags upon arrival
7. Extra leg room is good, but you have to put your bag in the overhead locker for take-off/landing
8. I'd recommend taking 1 small bag and putting the rest in the hold
9. or flying a different airline
10. (follow up on 8.) Baggage reclaim was amazingly quick, both ends!

Flew to Italy the other week. Out with Ryanair back with easyJet. Had bike in hold. Had small under seat bag and a rolly cabin bag. On the way there it was cheaper to pay for 10kg in overhead locker. On way back it was cheaper to put it in the hold. I didn’t see anyone having the size of their under the seat bag checked or questioned but some people had bags that were too long to go in the overhead locker in the normal orientation so put them up sideways thus removing a space for someone else… so the airline missed a trick there and should’ve rightly insisted they went in the hold. People were separated from their bags on board quite a bit.
We got charged for an oversize cabin bag coming back from the canaries on Ryanair once many years ago. It was a fair cop though as my missus had been on a shopping spree while we were there and definitely couldn’t squash the bag down to the right size!

11. Why are people such dickheads and have to leap out of their seats as soon as the belt light goes off? I hate people.

I fly with whoever's cheapest, ez Ryanair v similar, but if I have a bag it's worth going jet2 as it's included. For alicante Manchester lots of competition so prices are good, I once flew to Bristol cost me a fortune.

're flight case, I buy a big freezer shopping bag from b and m, it's spot on the size required and weighs nothing. I once had it weighed and was threatened with a penalty but I took stuff out and put them in my pocket.

Side note, summer flights are stupid expensive I had to look hard for the cheapies.

I recently saw one EasyJet employee help someone cram a squashable bag into the size-check cage to prove it would fit after the bag's owner was insufficiently determined to make it fit.

I think you'll be fine.
