Xmas was for the kids, Hogmanay for the adults.

In both of your posts Highlandman and epi, you use the term 'was' which is my point. I get that people put more importance on new year and even the solstice, but Christmas dwarves NY in general.

Yep. Half of Aldi was given over to Xmas stuff whereas all I'm seeing this week is a few extra pies.

Hogmanay/New Year celebrations used to be about a week long for me. Sleep was an optional extra. There's no doubt that christmas is the bigger deal for most folk and probably has been for 20- 30 years. These days the most important thing for me isn't even the solstice, but the point in the year where I stop looking back and start looking forwards, planning and hoping which is for me, Hogmanay. So this Hogmanay I will be getting absolutely tore into 2021, even if it is by staying at home and bringing in the new year with a couple of drams, on Zoom.
IIt's a very fortunate position to be in and I'm acutely aware that too many folk will be drinking a toast to "absent friends"

As the Scots are tight and like getting pished it's obvious that they'd prefer Hogmanay.

I've always been Xmas for family and Hogmanay for friends.

It's all academic this year though as I'm working tomorrow and knackered from waking up an hour early today. Doubt I'll see the bells.

I know a girl that does it, distanced only so don't see the problem. Plus some grooming tasks fall under animal welfare. As it happens ours needs his claws done so will be looking for such services ourselves.

58 cases in the last week here in Shetland now! That is f-ing mental! All due to social mixing indoors.

It's going to interesting to see the numbers in week or so, definitely a few extra cars parked at the neighbours last night and I'd wager they weren't the only ones 🤔

Bugger.

We've not been in a shop in 10+ days, we've been outdoors or at home. Time to keep up keeping away from everyone...

Struggling to think, apart from 5 miles rule (which is pointless) what else there was, one period of exercise a day, that was about it?.

F'in dog groomers along road still open!

The five mile rule allows city residents out of the city without allowing a free for all

Suspect it’ll be outdoor gatherings, all shops bar supermarkets, schools and non essential workplaces and travel.

Covered tennis courts and clay pigeon shooting beside us still open today. I did wonder whether that sort of thing might be knocked on the head for a while.

The 5 mile rule wasn't actually in the first iteration (i.e. there was no limit). I can see some sense in retaining it to void city-dwellers all congregating in the same parks. However, it just allows folk to take the piss. A tightening up on inter-region travel should be a no brainer but neither Nicola Sturgeon nor Police Scotland seem to think it's a major problem.

Having said that, I get the feeling folk are just going to ignore it anyway.

Back to debating if you're allowed to exercise your three year old outdoors as often as the local dog walkers and their hounds 😁

Don't agree with that at all. It's all about the cities and it opens up a lot of outdoor space which takes pressure off the more limited in city green space but also opens up way more parking. Where I am (Edinburgh) that's been huge- not without issues inevitably but the issues it has, are mostly issues that were happening anyway ie dangerous parking after the existing space overflows. That's ended up happening in more places, but therefore more widely spread (and more people actually getting to where they want to go). TBF it's more about infrastructure than anything else.

I've not made use of it personally at all- I'm lucky, I've got good from-the-door riding- but I think it'd be a big thing to lose.

How many folk have caught Covid from a dog? Do dogs no longer need nails clipped?

Shutting dog groomers makes as much sense as keeping all the kids off school so a few thousand folk can [s]continue to work[/s] get you pissed.

How many folk have caught covid from a sofa? Even DFS has finally shut!😂

Northwind, I wasn't saying there shouldn't be an allowance to get folks out of town, just think that 5 miles is a bit limiting.

Tj, I would clipe, but tbh I'm sure they're open for that daft nail clipping reason stated above.

My ex wife used to clip the dogs nails, don't think the dog ever paid her for it.

Ever bent a fingernail after you let it grow too long and hit it off something? ****ing hurts doesn't it? Now imagine walking on them constantly.

With the best will in the world we can't walk our dog enough to keep his nails worn down so he needs his trimmed. If you think animal welfare is daft then that's your issue but don't make it everyone elses.

1st lockdown we had to take our shaggy dog to vets to get his claws cut, also to empty his anal gland.

Neither of which I'm comfortable doing

The sensible thing in my mind would be to tighten up the working from home thing. Indoor contact and air sharing in a workplace has to be a bigger problem with this new variant. Other than that and the schools closing for longer I have no idea what tomorrow will bring.

There's a dog groomer opposite me. They were one of the first places to reopen and it annoyed me. It brings more people to the street, queuing outside the shop and because it's such a superfluous service it legitimises other places opening up when they shouldn't. If you can't trim your own pet's nails and hair you might want to rethink your stance on animal welfare and get an animal you can look after properly.

Fair play, I'll be happy to see the groomers shut when they shut the bike shops.

Here we go again.

Indeed. This doesn't affect me so **** anyone that it would.

That is the most staggeringly ignorant thing I've read on here for a while. Of course every dog owner should have forseen a global ****ing pandemic, how stupid of them.

On the dog issue, we took new pup to the vet for vaccinations on 23rd and it was immaculately clean and rigorous distancing, infact a lot stricter than our doctors surgery.

Is dog groomer essential ? Possibly given the health benefits that dogs bring to their homes, but I don’t know enough about it yet.

It's obvious that you need to keep your pets healthy.

You'll be eating them come March.

Just to say - a few folk seem to be thinking that many will ignore stricter restrictions. all I can say is compliance around me is pretty good

It's what you don't see that's the issue tj, namely folks still going into each others houses.

Seen quite a few folk on social media watching yesterday's football in groups, unreal.

SK I'd imagine a vet can trim yer furbabies claws, or empty it's shite glands, or are you just trying to be the crabbitest person on here?.

Yes a vet can do that but do you think they might have better things to do? Our local is seeing one person at a time, locked surgery and no waiting.

I know you don't like dogs but ffs stop being a knob about it.

I'm as pissed off about folk ripping the hole out of this as anyone else, not a day goes by at work without me hearing about some other prick running a bar out his mancave. But some folk are running businesses with genuine worth even if you can't see it. And if they aren't directly interacting with people what difference does it make anyway?

If nothing else this lockdown is bringing tolerance.

I was happy to see the Hawick homosexual hiking club out yesterday. Well I assume that's what the 2older male couples were. 4 people from 2 different households meeting outside. Well done them.

Other than schools, what is there left for them to shut down?

Though I was surprised to see a Card Factory shop open the other day. Just sells cards and other stuff for parties - which seems a little un-essential due to the lack of parties.

It's not just about further restrictions...

Many folk have given up on the hygiene aspect. For instance, I see fewer folk using the disinfecting point at the supermarket.

Also folk going shopping as a family/couple when it should be one person per trolley.

Not always maintaining social distancing.

Some reminders and further enforcement of these things will help.

On top of that folk are still travelling around the country. Many second/holiday homes here are occupied by folk outside of the region.

I'd second there needing to be more of a crackdown on people not working from home when they could - and when I say this I mean a push on their employers. My wife has to go in to the office to do video calls with clients despite being fully capable of doing them all at home - and she works for the flipping NHS!

I can’t work from home and my wife is a nurse but Edinburgh council will only accept kids into the hub if both parents are key workers! Yet Glasgow council only require one parent to be a key worker! This is going to be fun!

The problem here then is a discrepancy between those who really have to work (key workers) and those who are still working but in non-essential activities.
